Supply chain issues have affected products we rely on daily: furniture, cars, cream cheese. Now, hamantaschen have become the newest victim.
Many beloved flavors of hamantaschen, including raspberry, apricot, and cherry, are slashed and not expected to make an appearance on grocery shelves this Purim. The only flavor that triumphed through supply chain issues is prune.
Because of disappointment in the most unpopular flavor of hamantaschen being the only option, combined with exacerbation from pandemic stress, riots ensued at kosher bakeries around New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Protestors were heard shouting slogans such as, “Prune will not do!” and “Save us, Queen Esther!”
Not everyone is upset by the limited choices. Herbert Reis remembers sharing prune hamantaschen with his zayde many years ago. “I understand prune is the outcast of hamantaschen flavors, but prune reminds me of regular visits to my grandparents’ house.”
May Moshiach come speedily in our days…holding a box of chocolate hamantaschen.
