SAN DIEGO — In 1621,  a tragedy befell England’s Fortune Theatre as it caught fire. However, just two years later, it rose from the ashes, but the actors became known as the Poor Companions. Award-winning actor, director, and producer Richard Baird took on the mantle of Artistic Director of Poor Players Theatre Company, a nonprofit that closed its doors in 2017. This indefatigable actor, a true Shakespearean devotee, brings San Diego audiences the resurrection of the New Fortune Theatre Company with As You Like It.

Along with writer, dancer, musician, and actress Amanda Schaar, Baird co-founded this company with the mission that “encompasses work from all times, which are relevant, revealing, rarely done.” In order to bring this rare treat to life, music performed by Jaden Guerrero will accompany Shakespeare’s lyrics. The multi-talented cast is filled with singers and musicians.

The production will take place in Point Loma at the Westminster Presbyterian Church’s outdoor amphitheater, transformed into the Forest of Arden. Many well-known San Diegans will unite on stage to tell the story of a fallen noblewoman, Rosalind. As she strives for control and a new direction, others experience changes too. Romance blooms, bonds are strengthened and people are altered, all amid turbulent emotions married with Shakespeare’s customary wit and phrasing.

Dan Hodge, returning to San Diego following a decade in Philadelphia, directs this troupe of gifted actors each with his unique talents and agency. Baird plays Jaques, in this, his 51st Shakespearean role. He has appeared in a number of North Coast Rep productions, several San Diego Rep offerings, in Orange and LA counties, and in Oregon and Arizona. Amanda Schaar, Executive Director, performs the role of Rosalind. She has also been seen at North Coast Rep, Southwest Shakespeare Company, and classical and experimental venues across the country.

Walter Murray, another familiar and well-loved actor, has performed in San Diego, Los Angeles, and New York.  He is also the co-founder and former Executive Director of The San Diego Black Ensemble Theatre. He will portray Corin in this production. Steven Lone, debuting at New Fortune, will fill the role of Orlando. Lone has enchanted audiences with his acting at Cygnet, San Diego Rep, Moonlight, La Jolla Playhouse, and Ion theatres and storytelling as a regular reader for Write Out Loud.

Another beloved and committed actor, Rachael Van Wormer, is Celia in this production. This actor has been on many area stages and is quite involved in educational projects with San Diego youth assisting as a judge, dramaturg, and coach. She is also seen and heard reading Write Out Loud stories. Taylor Henderson’s credits include San Diego Musical Theatre, Moonlight Theater, Scripps Ranch, Patio Playhouse, and Coronado Playhouse. Henderson will be inhabiting Phoebe.

Leigh Akin, performer, director, and producer, will also take the stage in this production. She has been active on the San Diego scene and involved with Scripps Ranch theater among others. Her background is varied and her talents many. Danny Campbell, no stranger to Shakespeare will be performing. He has several film credits including Knightfall. Geoffrey Geissinger has been seen at North Coast Rep and is a storyteller, actor, and director. Also featured in this production are Xander Brown, Neil Macdonald, Brian McCann, Durwood Murray, and Michael Rodriguez. Baird expressed that he is very impressed and proud of this worthy and masterful ensemble of actors.
