Such a callous remark from a spiritual leader, to whom one goes for comfort and guidance, is indeed appalling. However, in all fairness, I have heard of a similar reaction in a Conservative synagogue. A young woman was grieving the recent loss of her father and wanted to recite Kaddish Yatom with the minyan. They asked for his Hebrew name, but he didn’t have one because he wasn’t Jewish. She was taken aback when they told her that there was no need to recite Kaddish for goyim, as if we grieve less for a loved on who is not a member of the tribe.

We are drawn to religious groups not by their theology, but by the sense of community that they seem to offer. Then, all too often, it is the prejudice embedded in the theology that drives people away.
