SAN DIEGO – The San Diego County Fair is getting ready to open its gates. Get ready for all the crowds and summertime fun. Does anyone still call it the Del Mar Fair, or is it just me?
Growing up, I spent every summer anticipating the fair as a checkmark on our summer vacation list. I was a disciplined and dedicated ballerina and performed with the La Mesa Recreation Center which guaranteed us free admission to the fair when the performance came around. My Dad (of blessed memory) would pack lunches and had strict rules of only letting us pick one treat. How can you decide with so many choices to choose from?
Here are some Jewish outings to the fair that might interest you:
The Senior Department at the Lawrence Family JCC is going to the fair from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19. Click here to purchase your tickets by Wednesday, June 12. Ticket includes admission to the fair and transportation from JCC.
Jewish Community Day at the Fair hosted by Jewish Federation of San Diego will be at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday June 30 at the exclusive Corona Beachhouse. Ready or not, the San Diego County Fair (Del Mar Fair) starts Wednesday, June 12 until Sunday, July 7.

La Mesa Pizza Works owner, Sarah Piha posted a special kosher catering menu on Facebook for Shavuot. All orders must be called in by 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 7 and picked up on Monday, June 10 or Tuesday, June 11. They will be closed for Shavuot. Adjacent is the holiday menu.

Speaking of yummy Shavuot food: Young Israel of San Diego shared the following Fettuccine Alfredo recipe:
Ingredients:
½ Cup Butter
1 ½ Cups Heavy Whipping Cream
2 Teaspoons Minced Garlic
½ Teaspoon Italian Seasoning
½ Teaspoon Salt
¼ Teaspoon Pepper
2 Cups Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese
Directions:
Add the butter and cream to a large skillet. Simmer over low heat for 2 minutes. Whisk in the garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper for one minute. Whisk in the Parmesan cheese until melted. Add your cooked pasta and enjoy!

Chabad at La Costa could use volunteers for their “Soup and Challah Project”. Volunteers are needed to pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah by 3 p.m. on Fridays and deliver them to the door of the recipients. Click here to volunteer, those who help get their own soup and challah!

Congregation Adat Yeshurun with Aish San Diego invite the community to “Gila’s Way: Mental Health and Suicide Awareness – Lesson’s to Learn Regarding the Value of Life” at 9:30 a.m. (right after Shachrit), Sunday, June 16 at Congregation Adat Yeshurun. Rabbi Shalom Hammer will share his daughter Gila’s story, mental health awareness, stigma, warning signs and other issues surrounding mental and emotional wellbeing in our community.

Congregation Beth Israel’s Tribe Oneg will be at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 21 immediately following Erev Shabbat Services, which begins at 6:15 p.m. Tribe is for young adults in their 20s-40s to meet, mingle, and celebrate Shabbat together. JFEST “Comedy for Koby” will be 7:30 p.m., Monday, June 24 at the Lawrence Family JCC. This evening of comedy benefiting the Koby Mandell Foundation with MC Avi Liberman, and LA comics Bob Zany & Kira Soltanovich.100 percent of the ticket proceeds support the Koby Mandell Foundation in Israel, giving support in many ways to bereaved families. Koby Mandell was a 13-year-old boy who was murdered by terrorists in 2001, while he was taking a walk near his home. “Comedy for Koby” is a central part of the Foundation’s therapeutic mission with the firm belief in the power of humor even in the most difficult challenges.
