SAN DIEGO – With a sad heart, Tifereth Israel Synagogue announced that Rabbi Mathew Marko will be resigning, effective June 30. He stated in a memo that he will be taking time for personal reasons and to spend time in Israel.
He is my birthday twin (a phrase that the late Rose Schindler told me). I was helping at a kiddush lunch on December 30, 2022, and he came up to me and said, “Happy Birthday to us both, we really got screwed having a birthday between December 25 to December 31.” I said, “You know our pain.” If it weren’t for Facebook, I guarantee no one would remember our birthday is December 27. So, when I received the email my birthday twin would be leaving, I was sad and heartbroken.
On another personal note, I am watching the NBA Finals. I always remind my husband that he won the jackpot when he married me. I love sports! I didn’t become a Dallas Mavericks fan until I moved to Dallas since we didn’t have an NBA team in San Diego. In 2011, the Mavs won it all and I realized while watching the parade, my Mavs shirt was a little tight. A little bit later I found out why, I was expecting twins.
