SAN DIEGO – As I was waiting in line at the bank to purchase a roll of quarters for a night of Mah Jongg, I overheard two women discussing the weather. They were complaining about the heat and humidity and how this weekend is going to be another hot one as well. Flashbacks of living in Dallas pop in my head when I hear that it is too hot or too cold. But we are acclimated, and anything above 80 degrees is a tad bit too warm for me as well.
My angora rabbit, Freckles, cannot withstand summer weather above 80 degrees. Rabbits do not have the ability to cool themselves down like dogs and cats. So, it is the perfect reason to turn on the air-conditioning since it is for the continued good health of my rabbit.

On a side note, I used to attend many “Paint and Sips” before COVID. They were primarily hosted at wineries or bars. My daughter used to get very upset that she couldn’t join me. I talked to many of the artists about scheduling an alternate location, like a coffee shop that would allow kids to attend. During the week of school’s shutting down, an artist friend had scheduled a paint session at a coffee shop, and we were able to squeeze in that “Mom and daughter” experience and paint mermaids together. The excitement of being able to paint, drink hot cocoa and “practice being an adult” was a great moment for us. Plus passing down artistry to both of my kids is always enjoyable. During the shutdown, many of these artists turned to Zoom so we were able to continue painting side by side in our home.

Chabad of Poway shares the following joke: Yossi and Mendy are sitting at a table together and there are two pieces of cake left, a big one and a little one. They sit there for a while and finally Yossi takes the bigger piece of cake. Mendy: That wasn’t very generous of you! Yossi: Why, which one would you have taken? Mendy: I would have taken the smaller one, of course! Yossi: Well then you got it.

Cailin Acosta is the assistant editor of the San Diego Jewish World.
We are all pretty spoiled in San Diego, me included. I have children living in Washington DC where it has been over 100 for several weeks. When I spoke to my son two days ago, it was 104. And if you’ve ever been to Washington in the summer you know that the humidity is drenching. My children have to get up at six to walk the dogs before it gets too hot for them. It is really brutal. This country really has to take climate change more seriously.
Cailin, this is great! Thank you for posting about Sharon Katz and Becky Guttin.
