SAN DIEGO – Baseball playoffs in October and the San Diego Padres have awakened the last couple of weeks. On Wednesday, Oct. 2, Padres won the Wild Card Series defeating the Atlanta Braves. Erev Rosh Hashanah had started and when services ended, I went over to some baseball fanatic friends and whispered, “what’s the verdict?” They told me we go onto play the Los Angeles Dodgers. I snarkily asked, how they knew this since we should not be checking our phones. We all laughed and said baseball doesn’t sleep. Personally, everyone’s observance of holidays and Shabbat is their private matter. FYI, the Dodgers won the first game of the divisional series Saturday night, beating the Padres 7-5.
In Jewish history, Sandy Koufax refused to pitch in a World Series game when he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, since it landed on Yom Kippur. However, Hank Greenberg, one of the best Jewish hitters, played during Rosh Hashanah and sat out the game on Yom Kippur. In my research, I read that many more players have not proclaimed they are Jewish due to antisemitism.
