SAN DIEGO (Family Statement) — Rabbi Jonathan Stein passed away on Shabbat, November 22, 2024 with his family at his side. He spent the last 50 years in service to the Jewish community, but his family always came first. He served at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation from 1974 to 1994, at Congregation Beth Israel from 1994-2001, and Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City from 2001-2014. He formed lasting and deep relationships with his congregants and students that have stood the test of time.

Rabbi Stein was a past president of the Central Conference of the American Rabbis, and was editor of the CCAR Journal for six years. He taught on the faculty of Hebrew Union College in New York and served on the boards of countless organizations. He was a wonderful teacher and a constant learner who loved to travel.

Born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, on November 18, 1948, he was the son of the late Amy Stein and Milton Stein (Frankie.) After his bar mitzvah, his family moved briefly to Philadelphia and then to Pittsburgh, where he became very involved in youth group. He earned a BS in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1969 and was ordained at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in 1975.

Jon was a wonderful husband to Susan, his wife of 55 years, doting father to Rachel (Len Rosner), and Jessica (Matt Colvin), loving brother to Diane (Andy Holzman), and terrific uncle to many nieces, nephews, and cousins. However, his most fulfilling role was as grandfather to four amazing grandchildren, Andrew, Leah, Lev and Shai.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, 9001 Towne Centre Drive, San Diego, followed by graveside interment at El Camino Memorial Park Cemetery, 5600 Carol Canyon Road, San Diego 92121.

  1. My prayers to Susan and your family. Jon was a rabbi whose candor and empathy made him a wonderful spiritual leader. I was blessed he was in my family’s life when we were in need. May his name always be a blessing.
