SAN DIEGO — Welcome back Melanie Rubin, who was on lengthy hiatus from her volunteer role as San Diego Jewish World’s chief license plate maven. This plate, which she spotted recently, can be interpreted in multiple ways. 1) “Sabra” is a nickname for someone born in Israel, and so many native Israelis are in California, this might have been the 48th person who applied for the license plate. 2) The driver may be 48 years old. 3) Israel became an independent country in 1948 and the driver celebrates that fact. 4) The driver, a native Israeli, was born in 1948, the same year Israel became independent. Whatever the exact meaning of the license plate’s message, we’re glad that eagle-eyed Melanie has spotted it.
