SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — Campus police at San Diego State University are hoping witnesses will come forward to aid their investigation into vandalism and antisemitic taunts aimed at AEPI early Wednesday morning, Feb. 26.
Without identifying the Jewish fraternity, SDSU President Adela de la Torre and SDUSD Police Chief Gregory L. Murphy said in a letter to the campus community that the incident is being investigated as a hate crime.
Anyone with knowledge of the incident is requested to contact Detective P. McMullen at 619 594 1987 or via email.
Fabienne Perlov, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, said in a statement that “members of another fraternity reportedly vandalized the AEPi house with paint and fireworks and broke windows while shouting hateful and antisemitic slurs.” She did not identify the other fraternity.
Saying “this behavior is unacceptable,” Perlov added that “we appreciate the prompt intervention by the SDSU Police Department and their commitment to investigating this incident as a hate crime. … It is critical the responsible parties are held accountable for their egregious actions to restore a safe learning and living environment.”
De la Torre, Murphy, and Josh Mays, SDSU Associate Vice President for Safety and Community Empowerment, commented “Any form of hate or discrimination has no place at our university, and we stand together in condemning such behavior in the strongest form. Our campus community thrives on respect and inclusivity, and we will continue to work tirelessly toward creating a safe environment for all.”
