
LA MESA, California – Holocaust survivor author Dr. Edith Eva Eger won her second Christopher Award for the book The Ballerina of Auschwitz that she wrote with Esme Schwall of Portland, Oregon. It is one of 12 books for adults and young people as the Christopher Awards program marks its 76th year.
The Awards celebrate authors, illustrators, writers, producers and directors, whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit” and reflect the Christopher motto, “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”

Ohr Shalom Synagogue shares a recipe by Karen Rund (late mother of Rabbi Scott Meltzer) for her famous Passover Apple Cake she would make every Passover:
Ingredients:
6 eggs
1 cup oil
2 cups sugar
2 cups cake meal
2 tablespoons potato starch
3 pounds tart apples, peeled, cut into thin wedges
Cinnamon and sugar
Directions:
Mix eggs, oil and sugar together. Add cake meal and potato starch. Mix apples with ¾ cup sugar mixed with 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Spread ½ dough in greased 9×13 pan, cover with apple slices. Spread last half of dough over apples. Sprinkle top of cake with mixture of 1/3 cup sugar mixed with ¾ teaspoon cinnamon. Bake 1.5 hours at 350 degrees. Bake for the same day or freeze and defrost the day you are going to use it.
