Jewish refugees in Oswego topic of Mandelbaum lecture

Lawrence Baron

CORONADO, California (Press Release)– The Agency for Jewish Education has announced the lineup of its Mandelbaum Family Lecture Series. Lawrence Baron, SDSU, will kickoff the monthly series.

Baron’s lecture will take place in the Winn Room of the Coronado Library on Oct. 20 at 10:30 am. His lecture is titled, “Haven from the Holocaust: Oswego, NY 1944-1946.”

During World War Two, the United States granted collective sanctuary on American soil to only one group of refugees.  This group was brought from Italy in 1944 to be interned at Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York for the duration of the war.  This lecture examines the backgrounds of these displaced persons, Roosevelt’s belated decision to admit only them, their reception in Oswego, and their contributions to their adopted country since being granted citizenship.

Lawrence Baron has held the Nasatir Chair of Modern Jewish History at San Diego State University since 1988. He has authored and edited four books, the most recent being Projecting the Holocaust into the Present: The Changing Focus of Contemporary Holocaust Cinema. In 2006 he delivered the keynote address at Yad Vashem’s first conference on the Holocaust in feature films.

Future lectures will feature professors speaking on their own areas of research. Professor Oren Meyers of Univ. of Haifa will speak in November on “Israel’s Memory Wars.” In December, Professor Sandy Lakoff, UCSD will share a “Mid-East Update.” Other speakers include professors William Propp, Ghada Osman, Glenn Levine and Rebecca Moore.

The Mandelbaum Family Lecture Series is a program of the Agency for Jewish Education and is free and open to the public.
