Castro criticizes Iran, expresses sympathy for Israel and Jews

HAVANA – In a three-day series of interviews in September with correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg, Fidel Castro reflected upon anti-Semitism, Iran and Israel.

He told of believing as a child that the Jews killed Jesus, but not knowing exactly what a Jew was.  He reflected that Jews have been persecuted for 2,000 years, and may have been made stronger as a people by the experience.

In his interview with Goldberg, he also urged Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to cease denying the Holocaust and to stop his threats of annihilation against Israel.

He also said that as a theocracy, Iran is less likely to submit to U.S. sponsored sanctions than a secular country like Cuba, noting that even Cuba was able to resist the U.S.
