Dumanis tells her opposition to California’s marijuana initiative

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)–San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis has explained why she is opposing Proposition 19 on California’s Nov. 2 ballot.  The measure would legalize marijuana use in the state.

In a published statement, Dumanis said: “Proponents of Prop. 19 want you to believe it will improve public safety and increase government revenue through taxing marijuana sales. The truth is Prop. 19 does not regulate, does not control and does not tax marijuana as its name implies. Instead, it leaves it up to local governments to set up that legal framework and enforce it at their considerable time and expense.  The result would be a confusing patchwork of laws and a huge burden on an already-financially strapped San Diego County and its 18 incorporated cities. It also means zero revenue for the state of California.

“To give you an example of just how ill-conceived this ballot measure is, Prop. 19 has no language to prevent drivers from smoking immediately before driving and allows passengers in a vehicle to smoke marijuana.  The San Diego Union-Tribune says Prop 19 ‘may be the worst-drafted legislation since 1996.’

“Both candidates for governor, the Attorney General, every major law enforcement organization, the San Francisco Chronicle and many community organizations, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, oppose Prop 19.  For more information, go to www.noonproposition19.com.”
