AMHERST, Massachusetts (Press Release) – The Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Massachusetts, is now accepting applicants for three programs for recent graduates, college students, and high school students: the 2018 Steiner Summer Yiddish Program, the 2018–19 Yiddish Book Center Fellowship Program, and the 2018 Great Jewish Books Summer Program.
The Yiddish Book Center Graduate Fellowship offers recent graduates with backgrounds in Yiddish and Jewish studies the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience working as full-time Center staff members. Fellows spend a year learning valuable professional skills and contributing to the Center’s major projects—bibliography, communications and publication, digital collections, educational programs, translation, and Yiddish education. They receive a $30,000 stipend as well as healthcare coverage.
The 2018–19 Yiddish Book Center Fellowship Program runs from September 2018 to August 2019. Applications are due January 7, 2018. More information can be found at yiddishbookcenter.org/fellowship-program.
Now in its fourth decade, the Steiner Summer Yiddish Program is an immersive program in Yiddish language and culture, with beginner and intermediate tracks, open to college and graduate students ages 18–26. Participants can earn six college credits during the intensive seven-week course while studying with leading scholars in seminar-style classes. Outside the classroom, the students take a field trip to New York, where they attend Yiddish cultural events, and take part in events at the Yiddish Book Center, including the annual Yidstock: The Festival of New Yiddish Music. Intermediate students also participate in paid internships, working on projects at the Center. Alumni of the program often continue with further studies in Yiddish and Jewish culture and history and pursue careers in the field.

At the Great Jewish Books Summer Program, rising high school juniors and seniors read selections from important works of modern Jewish literature and consider how they speak to the opportunities and challenges we face today. Under the guidance of college professors, they examine how the rich legacy of modern Jewish literature can inform us in the twenty-first century in a lively program full of social, cultural, and recreational opportunities.
The 2018 Steiner Summer Yiddish Program has two sessions: one from July 22–27 and a second from July 29–August 3, 2018. Applications are due March 5, 2018.
The three renowned educational programs are part of the Center’s extensive educational offerings. Other programs include the Great Jewish Books Teacher Summer Seminar for educators, the Yiddish Book Center Translation Fellowship, and online, weekend, and weeklong courses for adult learners.
