An introduction to San Diego Jewish World’s new format

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Jewish World is now offering free subscriptions for busy readers who simply don’t have the time to check our website several times a day to see what’s new.

Those who subscribe using the box in the left hand column of the home page will receive each evening a list of stories that were posted that day.   The list will include the headline of the story and the first paragraph—just enough to enable you to decide if you would like to read that story or skip to the next one.  A link from each story will allow readers to go directly to the article that they would like to read.

This is just one of the changes we have made to provide San Diego with a Jewish newspaper worthy of your attention.  Our front page has 12 categories of news: Israel, USA, Jewish, Middle East/Africa, Europe/Asia, Western Hemisphere, Australia/Pacific, San Diego, Culture, Science/Education, Sports/Lifestyles and Travel/Sightseeing. Whenever a new story is posted in those categories, older stories are pushed to the archives– links to which you will find on the latest story’s continuation page.

Our site has a sophisticated search mechanism, enabling you to type in key words to find any story.  One of our features, which we place in the San Diego news column, is “Adventures in San Diego Jewish History,” in which we reprint stories about San Diego’s Jewish community from old newspapers such as the Southwestern Jewish Press and the San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, the archives of which we own.  This is a wonderful way for genealogists to search for stories mentioning San Diego Jewish ancestors.

We have more than 50 writers across the United States and around the world regularly contributing news and commentaries to San Diego Jewish World, and we always are interested in receiving other stories volunteered by their authors.  Our slogan is that “there is a Jewish story everywhere” and we particularly welcome Jewish news from remote places.

Our new format provides space at the bottom of each article for you to comment.  For your reading convenience, we filter out spam – comments having nothing to do with the topic at hand – and also prevent comments that attack Jews as a people, or that attack any other group based on gender, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or sexual preference.

We are interested in intelligent discussion, not in shouting matches about the news.  Should you desire to write to us about a topic not yet in our news report, please feel free to send me an email at sdheritage@cox.net.  All such communications will be given serious consideration for puoblication.

We hope that you will enjoy the improved San Diego Jewish World.  Its purpose is to serve you, the readers.
