JFS seeks votes in Pepsi contest for the Hand Up Youth Food Pantry

SAN DIEGO (Press Release)–The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service is just one of 1,142 organizations competing for part of $1.3 million from the Pepsi Refresh Project.

In an effort to support those who generate innovative, optimistic ideas, the Pepsi Refresh Project (of Pepsi-Cola North American Beverages) is awarding more than $20 million throughout the year to move communities forward. Individuals can apply for grants to benefit a variety of projects and site visitors can vote for the best ideas for funding.

The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service is participating in the $250,000 grant bracket. With these fund, Hand Up will be able to:

  • Purchase a refrigerated truck to distribute 3,000 pounds of fresh produce weekly.
  • Serve 1,000 military families at monthly distributions on two military bases.
  • Serve food to homeless and low-income families (5,000+ people annually).
  • Train 30 teenagers in the leadership development program, building the future leaders of tomorrow.

“With just a little effort every day, we can make a tremendous impact in the lives of those who wonder where their next meal will come from,” says Shelly Hahne, Hand Up Youth Food Pantry Supervisor. “Many of these people have never needed this kind of help before and are turning to us. Now we’re turning to you to help make it happen. Please spend 30 seconds every day in November to give thanks for what you have and to help someone in need by voting for us.”

The Hand Up Youth Food Pantry at Jewish Family Service focuses on helping people get back on their feet. In the past year, Hand Up has provided more than 7,000 people with 22,000 food bags totaling 125,121 meals to San Diego’s hungry.
