Four Jewish Latino films on tap at festival in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Press Release) –The Media Art Center’s San Diego Latino Film Festival plans to offer  the best of Jewish Latino films to San Diego County from November 2010 to February 2011. The Jewish Latino Film Series is a four- month celebration of films by Jewish Latino filmmakers or by filmmakers of other heritages about the Jewish Latino experience. The screening of each film will be at 7:00 p.m. November 10, December 1, January 26 and February 23. 

Films to be presented include past festival favorites:

El Nido Vacio on Wednesday November 10 2010, at Poway Ultrastar Theater, 13475 Poway Rd. 92122

Starring Cecilia Roth. Leonardo and Martha are a truly enviable example of the species “married couple,” but when their last child leaves home, the middle-aged couple suddenly finds itself alone for the first time in years. While the husband tackles the empty-nest syndrome with vivid fantasies, his wife throws herself into a whirlwind of activities. Guest introduction by Robert Moutal of Telemundo

El Brindis on Wednesday December 1, 2010, at AMC Chula Vista 2015 Birch Road Chula Vista, 91915

Starring Ana Serradilla. The story about Emilia, a young photographer, who hardly knows her Chilean father, decides to travel to Chile and meet him. There, she will find out that he is suffering from a terminal disease, and while trying to come to terms with him, things gets complicated when she starts a romance with one of his best friends a local rabbi. Cara de Queso on Wednesday January 25, 2011, UCSD “The Loft” 9500 Gilman Dr., 92093

Ariel and his family spend their summers in an idyllic Jewish country club. Everything is perfect. Or is it? Employing a variety of memorable characters and hilarious subplots, Cara de Queso explores the ties that bind in an Argentinean Jewish community. Guest introduction by Isaac Artenstein, Filmmaker

5 Dias sin Nora on Wednesday February 23 2011, at CSU San Marcos 333S.Twin Oaks Valley Rd., 92096

Starring Cecilia Suarez. Nora had a plan. It would bring her ex-husband, Jose, and the rest of their family together for a magnificent Passover feast. But there is a flaw in her plan- a mysterious photograph from the past, hidden under the bed, which leads Jose to reexamine their relationship and rediscover their undying love for each other. Media Arts Center San Diego Founder and Executive Director, Ethan van Thillo, is excited about reaching new audiences in different parts of San Diego County and celebrating the Jewish Latino experience. Van Thillo states, “As our festival prepares for our upcoming 18th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival in March 2011, the opportunity to present great Jewish Latino films for San Diego County residents will hopefully allow a taste of what our annual festival is all about.”

General admission for all films are $10 and for student admission $7.
