Mission Valley Country Club seemed to be the setting for a lot of kids. “Surprise,” shouted all the gang at a party given for Evelyn Witz by Debbie Strauss and Betty Krasnow. It was Evelyn’s sixteenth birthday and was appropriately celebrated with Alan Riedman, Diane Fogelman, Garry and Eddie Naiman, Judy Herz, Robert Bloomer, Janice Klaskin, Jack Harpe, Zena Feurzeig, Sam Breitbard, Jerry Mendell, Carol Glassman, Evelyn’s brother, Jerry, and many others.
Watch for news of the coming activities of T.Y.L. The meetings contain social and religious events of real interest and fun for everyone.
Congrats to Norman Bard who received a Certificate of Merit in recognition of meritorious participation in the 1st Annual Greater San Diego Science Fair.

Beth Israel Sisterhood Tells May Program

In the Temple Center, May 11, 1955, 11:45 a.m., Beth Israel Sisterhood will hold the Annual Installation Luncheon. The program for the afternoon will be a very impressive Cantata called “A Tree of Life.” This cantata, telling in song, verse of the progress of life through various stages, was originally presented by Temple de Hirsch of Seattle.
The Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood production will be coached by Cantor Julian Miller, with staging by Valia Dennis. Appearing in the various roles are Mrs. Robert Beitscher, Mrs. Louis Bickman, Mrs. Robert Miller, Mrs. Samuel Kerper, Mrs. Ed Zuckerman, Mrs. Rod Horrow; Mrs. M.E. Sims; Mrs. Nathan Feinberg, Mrs. M. Baume, Mrs. Louis Karp, Mrs. Richard Silberman, Mrs. Irving Hertz, Mrs. Ben Carnot, Rabbi Morton J. Cohn, Mrs. Arthur Pogrell, Miss Jane Cohn and Howard Hertz.
With such an exceptionally fine program as well as a delicious luncheon surpassing even Sisterhood’s high standards, it is urgently recommended that reservations be made at once by calling either Mrs. Sydney Goldstein, at AT 2-7345, or Mrs. Irving Hertz, at CO-4-3021.

“Off to Verdugo Hills” is the thought in every Aleph’s mind as A.Z.A. makes tentative pans to visit its sister organization in Los Angeles, Verdugo Hills B.B.G. The date isset for May 20.
Under discussion is a plan to enter the A.Z.A. bowling team in a league. There will be a bowling meeting in the next few weeks.
On Saturday and Sunday, April 16 and 17, San Diego A.Z.A. played host to six Alephs from the Glendale Chapter of A.Z.A. A social, a baseball game (which the home team won 14 to 7) and a trip to Mission Beach Amusement Park highlighted the two days’ activities. The six boys, including Howard Miller, president of the Glendale A.Z.A., were lodged overnight in the homes of Gary and Eddie Naiman, Mark Ulansky, Jack Sharpe, Pete Colt, Al Cohan and Jerry Mendell.

Headlining the activities for the past week was the big “Name-A-Tune” contest sponsored by the Teen-Age Group on April 221st. Bill Browning, popular disc jockey of KFMB Radio Station, was master of ceremonies and won the hearts of his audience with his warm, gracious personality. Winners of the contest were Gary Cantor, Bob Johannis, Marcia Pearl and Sam Horowitz. Other special activities are being planned for the coming weeks.
By popular request, a second series of contract bridge lessons will be conducted at the Center by MR. Leo Zwiebel, beginning Monday, May 2, at 8 p.m., promptly. The series will feature the Culbertson Point Count System and will consist of 10 lessons for beginners and intermediate players. Member as well non-members interested in joining this interesting class are asked to contact the Center, aT 1-7744.
The Junior High Group is now meeting every Wednesday night. As a result of the change in meeting date, an increase in attendance has been noted. Ettie Mallinger, group leader, announces that the girls’ club is working very energetically planning new activities. Marilyn Eldex was elected president and Tony Aminoff, secretary. Topping the activity agenda will be the Mother-Daughter dinner in celebration of Mother’s Day to be given at the Mallinger home on May 4th. The girls will prepare the meal and are eagerly ancious to surprise their mothers by showing their culinary skill.
The Young Adult Ping Pong Tournament attracted many enthusiastic entrants as the tournament opened on April 19th. Jay Borushek was declared singles champion in the men’s division. Mixed double matches will be played this week with the tournament to be concluded on May 3.

N.Y. Philharmonic To Play Here Saturday

Famed New York Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra will be heard in SAN Diego for the first time Saturday (April 30) at 8:30 p.m. in the Russ Auditorium.
Guido Cantelli, brilliant Italian maestro will be on the podium for the local concert. Cantelli who has been guest conductor with the orchestra for the last 4 seasons is sharing the baton on the tour with Dimiti Mitropoulos, the orchestra’s music director.
The local program will include Rossini’s Overture to “The Siege of Corinth,” Brahms’ “Symphony No. 1, C. Minor,” “Clouds,” and “Festivals” by Debussy and Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloe.”
Tickets are available at Palmer Box Office, 640 Broadway.

Jr. Charity League

Members of the Junior Charity League gathered together on the nite of April 16th for their annual dinner with their husbands. Forty sat down to a beautifully appointed table in the new marine room of the El Cortez.
The club is currently interested in UNICEF, New Eyes for the Needy, work with the blind here locally, and engages in all local Jewish philanthropies. Their recent Valentine Card Party netted a large sum, all of which was turned over to the San Diego Foundation for Polio.

Plans for the Annual Country Dance were completed at the last meeting of the Jolly 16, held at the home of Mrs. Maxwell Kaufman. As in the past, the keynote will be FUN, with dancing in cottons for the ladies and no ties for the men. The dance will be held at the Caspers Ranch Club on Sunday, June 5th. This is an evening for the whole family with a nominal charge of $1.10 including tax. Set aside the date.

Day Camp Registration Urged By Center

Advance Pre-Registration for San Diego Jewish Community Center’s Day Camp indicates a heavy Camp Jaycee enrollment this summer.
Leonard Zlotoff, Chairman of the Center’s Program Committee, advises all parents of children between the ages of five and fourteen, who wish to take advantage of eight weeks of day camp to pre-register their children so that they will be sure ofa place in the camp.
Additional counselors who have been asked to the staff include Morrie Frankstone, San Diego City School Teacher; Sam Sosna, Senior at Santford University; Ettie Mallinger, State College Junior; Elana Burch, Sophomore at a Midwestern School, and Phyllis Mollick, State College Sophomore, all of whom have been counselors in past years. Among the new counselors to be added to the staff are MRs. Barbara Katz, graduating State College Senior.
Camp Jaycee will be operating in its ninth year when it opens on June 27. Recognized by community leaders and community organizations as the outstanding Day Camp of its kind in San Diego, It has become a pattern for other operations in the community. Camp Jacyee is operated by the Jewish Community Center on a non-sectarian basis and admits children of all races, creeds and nationality in keeping with its philosophy of “Learning To Live Together.”

The Cooperative Nursery School of the Jewish Community Center will hold its monthly business meeting Thursday evening, May 12th, at 8:00 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Murray Luftig, 4312 College Avenue. The main order of business will be the presentation of nominees to be elected to office in the school’s semi-annual election in June. Chairman of the Nominating Committee is Mrs. Jerome Greenstein. Other members of it are Mrs. Harold Weinberger, Mrs. Marvin L. Stein and Mrs. Peter Tolins.

Aaron Cohen, aged 72 years, passed away on April 25, 1955. A resident of San Diego for thirty-three years, he is survived by his widow, Bessie, three sons, David, Sam and Herman, and five grandchildren.
Services were held at the Lewis Colonial Mortuary on April 27th; Rabbi Monroe Levens officiated. Interment will be at th Home of Peace Cemetery.
Mr. Cohen was a member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue and the Eagles Lodge.
