Hold Memorial Services Tonite For Nazi Victims
Southwestern Jewish Press, May 13, 1955, Pages 1, 5

Tonight San Diego Jewry will hold memorial services commemorating the death of 6,000,000 Jews by Nazi Germany.

At the same time, at 8:30 p.m., a service of thanks commemorating 10 years of liberation for those who survived will be given.

Both services are under the sponsorship of the New Life Club headed by Carl Friend.  Founded one year ago through the efforts of Dr. Walter Ornstein, Chairman of the united Jewish Fund Émigré Committee, the club now has a membership of well over 100 families who have started a new life in San Diego.

Joseph Schwartz, Chairman of the Committee, states that a program has been prepared under the direction of Rabbi Baruch Stern, spiritual leader at Beth Jacob, which will include besides the regular memorial services, a narration and Hebrew melodies sung and chanted by Cantor Israel Dubner of Israel.

Participating in the services will be Carl Friend, Mendel Flaster, Ruth Lavender, Joe Schwartz, Henry Stein, and Charles Tennen, all members of the New Life Club.

With them will be 3 local residents who during and after world War II helped in the liberation of those who survived. These are William Colt, a former UNRA member; Maxwell Kaufman, who was in Europe with the Joint Distribution Committee, and Albert A. Hutler, who was a displaced persons officer with American Military Government.

Welfare Fund Drive At 50 Percent Mark
Southwestern Jewish Press, May 13, 1955, Page 1

The United Jewish Fund drive for $220,000 pushed over the 60 percent mark with announcement by campaign chairman Max Rabinowitz that funds raised so far had reached $240,000 or 64 percent of the campaign goal.

As the Fund moved ahead Treasurer Harry Snyder reported forwarding $26,800 to the United Jewish Appeal for use in Europe, No. Africa and Israel.  Another $2,000 was sent to Histadrut Joint Defense Appeal of B’nai B’rith.  ADL was sent $1,000.

Spurred by a gift from the children of Beth Israel Religious School of $260.00 and the excellent record of the women’s division, campaign leaders have promised to push the campaign to a successful conclusion.

Reporting for the advanced gift division, co-chairmen Harry Snyder, Al Steinbaum and Harry Sugarman said that solicitations in this group still had $30,000 in gifts to be secured.

Women’s division reports over $30,000 raised with approximately $5,000 additional to be secured.

With a third and final meeting for young matrons planned for May 24 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Rabinowitz, it is expected that the $35,000- Women’s goal would be achieved.

All divisions are still working to complete their job before Saturday, May 22, which has been set as “cleanup day.”  On that day every Jewish family that has not as yet contributed will be contacted for their gift by a volunteer worker.

Chairman Rabinowitz in expressing satisfaction with the progress of the drive said, “Though we are running 9 ½ percent better than last year the results are not completely satisfactory. People should make their gift now so that the campaign can be concluded on schedule.”

“There are still over 750 individuals who gave in 1954 who have as yet not given, and these are the people who are holding up the campaign,” he concluded.

Over 1400 contributions have already been made to the drive in one of the fastest campaigns in many years. If only those who gave last year give in 1955, the fund will have the largest number of contributors in its history.
