‘With the Guardians’

For sheer concentration rivaling a tournament match involving international chess players, we recommend the monthly gin game between Doc Solomon and Ben Harris. What could easily be misinterpreted as a lack of faith (but is not) – each player keeps score – each score is then thoroughly audited by the other player – and finally at game’s end, Art Glickman runs a check tape on both scores.

There is nothing as welcoming a friend and member back into the fold after a prolonged siege of illness. It was genuinely heartwarming to see Al Neuman walk in at the last meeting and be greeted so sincerely by his fellow Guardians. Glad to have you back with us, Al.

When it comes to merchandising some of our industrial leaders could take a lesson from Dave Stotsky. His deals and box lots for selling tickets for the beautiful door prizes each month is pure artistry. Genial Dave is one of our most ardent members and maintains an unexcelled attendance record.

Vice-Prexy Sammy Addleson had a harrowing experience at the Kentucky Derby where he guested with sportsman Johnny Alessio and Bill Solof. The sixth race had just been run –anxiety began to surge for the next race—the Big One – betting fever—Nashua or Summer Tan—this is what our little Sammy had traveled half-way across the country to witness. As he stood with his back to the paddock, a fast moving trainer rushed up to Sammy –handed him a saddle and sputtered: “Awright, Willie get aboard your mount.”

Some of the bigger deals have been consummated during the cocktail hour which precedes every meeting. Suspicions are forgotten—mutual trusts are extended-negotiations fare smoothly. And thus it was that members Sam Rassin and Ralph Feldman, operating successfully as a unit, completely outfumbled Eddie Cantor for the three drinks.

The revived Grand Department store has taken on a decided Guardian atmosphere – Guardian members, affiliated with the 5th Ave. store are Leo Krasne, Al DeSure, Sam Rassin, Its Penter, Sol Brown and Pedro Gomez. We all join in wishing them Mozzel in their new venture.

It happened at the May 5th meeting – the discussion at the dinner table had finally narrowed down to the most unusual topic: whether or not deep-sea fish had ever attacked a human being. The subject matter was most interesting enough – each of the six members grouped around the table took a turn at voicing an opinion or relating some oft-told tale—Julius Krasner told of a frightening experience in South Africa—Laury Cantor narrated a story he had read in an adventure magazine—there were the usual skeptics and then with the suddenness that always accompanies the final curtain, “Chief’ Aronoff said, “You know, only yesterday at the Saddlerock, I saw a man eating barracuda.”

Symphony Group Seeks Funds For Concerts
Southwestern Jewish Press, May 13, 1955, Page 3
A drive to raise $10,000 for the San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association’s maintenance fund got under way according to Mrs. Fred G. Goss, Symphony president.
Purpose of the drive, Mrs. Goss said, is to raise funds to supplement monies received from ticket sales for the regular series of seven summer concerts sponsored by the Association under the direction of Robert Shaw.
“This year with consolidation with the San Diego Philharmonic already accomplished it is particularly important that our maintenance fund drive succeed. We have assumed the responsibility of presenting a winter series of programs and our costs are automatically increased,” Mrs. Goss said.
The maintenance fund drive, Mrs. Goss said, would go a long way toward meeting the expenses of such internationally known artists as Benny Goodman and Rudolf Serkin, already signed by the symphony to appear in the summer series.

Wrong Numbers Bane of Telephone
Southwestern Jewish Press, May 13, 1955, Page 3
A program to help San Diego telephone users help themselves has been stepped up by local telephone employees.
Telephone users here still are making around 60,000 dialing mistakes daily in the metropolitan area, or five percent of their total calls, according to Russell Kliegel, Pacific Telephone district manager.
He believes many subscribers still haven’t adjusted their dialing habits to the new prefixes and seven digit numbering that were introduced her in January of last year.
“Subscribers suffer the most from incompleted calls,” he said. “Dialing irregularities generally do not reach an operator.”
Kliegel believes the problem actually goes to the principle of being good neighbors. The local figure is two and one-half times higher than before the number change.
“We generally find that when we talk about wrong numbers, most people think we aren’t talking to them, but that it’s always the other person who makes the mistakes,” he said.
Company charts show most everyone is guilty. The old timer has just as much trouble with what he calls “fumble fingers” as the newcomer.
Employees have submitted lists of firms with old numbers on their brochures, business cards, or trucks. Service representatives have telephoned most of these persons, and pointed out that the old number is of no value to anyone.
He suggested three basic steps to good telephone usage.
1. Look up all numbers that you are not sure of in your telephone directory.
2. Before dialing, jot the number down. With the number before you, when you dial, you will save time and the embarrassment of wrong numbers.
3. Listen for the dial tone, then carefully dial the first two letters and the numeral in the prefix, followed by the remaining four digits in the number.

In celebration of Mother’s Day, 12 members of the Junior High Girl’s Club entertained their mothers with a full-course dinner May 4th at the home of their leader, Ettie Mallinger. The committee of girls with Tony Aminoff as chairman demonstrated unusual ability in helping to prepare and serve the delicious meal. After dinner, the girls presented a very delightful and impressive program which concluded with each mother receiving a red rose from her daughter. Two grandmothers also enjoyed the evening’s festivity. While the girls were thus occupied, Herbert Gross, group leader of “The Gent’s Club” arranged a bowling party for the boys of the Jr. High Group. The boys demonstrated much enthusiasm and skill in bowling and will plan similar events in the future.
As an outstanding event on the Center calendar for June 4th will be a big orchestra dance honoring all high school graduates of the Teen-Age Group. A special meeting will be held Thursday night to formulate final plans for this party.
Honoring the college graduates and college students returning home for the summer vacation, the Young Adult Group will sponsor a dinner and party the latter part of June.
