NCJW criticizes Senate for failing as holidays approach to extend unemployment benefits

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Press Release)–The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) on Thursday condemned the Senate’s failure to pass an extension of unemployment benefits before they expired November 30. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan released the following statement:

“It is unconscionable that extension of long-term unemployment benefits has languished in the Senate while benefits expired November 30. The Senate should act immediately to ensure that those out of work for six months or more do not miss a payment as we head into the holidays. Recipients should not be made to fear how they will afford food for their families going forward while senators go home to enjoy a festive meal.

“More than two million workers will lose their benefits by December 31. An extension of benefits not only assists hard hit individuals and their families but also serves to stimulate the economy, since recipients typically spend their benefits right away. Last year, 3.3 million people averted poverty because they received benefits. This year alone, nearly 9.5 million workers collecting federally funded benefits contributed an estimated $68 billion to the nation’s economy — funds that helped save other jobs.

“An extension of one year is required to alleviate the hardship caused by long-term unemployment, guarantee help to the overall economy by increasing spending, and introduce some stability into this critical safety net program. Enacting such an extension should be the Senate’s highest priority.”
