SAN DIEGO (Press Release)– The living legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be recognized and celebrated at the 23rd Annual All People’s Breakfast at 7 a.m., Monday, Jan. 17 at the San Diego Convention Center. Hosted by Equality Allliance of San Diego County, the theme of the Breakfast is “The Media and the Movement: From apathy to activism, media as a force for social change.”
Delivering the keynote address will be Jehmu Greene, president of the Women’s Media Center, a New York-based, national nonprofit organization working to ensure women are powerfully and visibly represented in the media. Greene is also a commentator for Fox News. Previously, she served as president of Rock the Vote, orchestrating its expansion from a 1,500-member organization to an iconic vehicle for young voter registration and empowerment with more than 1 million members.
In addition to Greene, the program will feature acclaimed local artist/activists, the Community Space and, for the first time, community bloggers and youth videographers. Veteran journalist and news anchor Dan Rather will provide brief remarks via videotape, recalling his fateful April 4, 1968 reporting of the assassination of Dr. King and discussing the terrific challenges and revolutionary outcomes of television journalism during that time…as he experienced them.
Morris Casuto, recently retired regional director of the San Diego ADL, will be honored with the 2011 San Diego Human Relations Commission’s Ashley L. Walker Social Justice Award.
Breakfast sponsors include the Leichtag Family Foundation, San Diego Community College District, ACLU of San Diego and Imperial Counties, San Diego Regional Airport Authority, Tariq Khamisa Foundation, and the INSPIRE Fund.
