Latke champion says this spud’s for you

VISTA, California (Press Release) — Congregation B’nai Tikvah held its first annual “Iron Bubbes” Latke Challenge at a Hanukkah celebration Friday, Dec. 3.  Eight contestants competed for the title of “Best Latke” but the winner was not even a Bubbe (Grandmother in Yiddish) but a Grandfather instead.

Gerry Wolfson, long-time member, won unanimously for his perfectly crispy and flavorful potato pancakes.  Wolfson explained that he has been perfecting his recipe for many years and that he, not only carefully picks the best potatoes to use but also uses a special oil that can withstand higher temperatures.

Wolfson said, “When my wife tasted my latkes, she said they were, without a doubt, the best I had ever made.  As my wife is a gourmet cook herself, I was quite flattered.” Wolfson says he will share his golden spoon award and gift certificate with his wife, Marge, who is his culinary inspiration.

Latkes are a traditional Hanukkah dish also referred to as potato pancakes which are served with applesauce or sour cream.  Because Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of oil, it is traditional to eat fried foods such as latkes and donuts during the holiday. Judges for this event were Allen Amster, owner of I Love Bagels Café in Oceanside, long-time B’nai Tikvah member Perry Coles, and, retired Marine, Mark Haiman.

All in all, the Latke Challenge and Hanukkah Celebration was a huge success attracting over 120 attendees who consumed 400 latkes, 120 ounces of applesauce and 80 ounces of sour cream.  In addition to the Latke Challenge, there was a full night of fun activities including Menorah Lighting, a Silent Auction, Recycled Menorah making for the kids and a presentation by the Hebrew School.
