Preventing Gun Violence topic for Yom Kippur

Donald H. Harrison

SAN DIEGO — Rabbi Devorah Marcus of Temple Emanu-El will moderate a panel on gun violence prevention at 1 p.m., following morning Yom Kippur services Oct. 9.  Panelists will include Ron Marcus of San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention; Cathi Marx, chair of Temple Emanu-El’s security committee; James “Bo” Morris, a supervisory special agent with the DEA, and Ann Sharp, founder of NeverAgain CA, a community advocacy group.  “We all want a safer world, one in which mass shootings no longer fill the day’s headlines,” explained Janice Steinberg in the Reform congregation’s October bulletin.  “People of good will may part company over the question of how we, as a society, can achieve that.  How do we balance our concern for public safety with the commitment to preserve individual rights?” … Elsewhere in the bulletin, the congregation’s co-presidents, Eric Rosenzweig and Jeff Schindler, announced that over the next several months, “your Board will be initiating a series of listening opportunities, so that we can hear from members of our Temple Emanu-El community about the challenges faced in our personal lives, our Jewish lives, and of course our family lives.  We will then embark on a projet designed to work to address our shared challenges with the resources already available to us at our Temple Emanu-El community, so that we can capitalize on the abundance with which we have been blessed.”

Sociologist Eric Klinenberg, author of Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Social Polarization and the Decline of Civic Life, will discuss his book at 7 p.m., Oct. 24, at the Central Library downtown.  Library Director Misty Jones says one of Klinenberg’s key arguments is that “the future of democracy rests not simply on shared values, but also on shared spaces – especially libraries  — where essential and sometimes life-saving connections are made.”
