Your Assemblyman Reports

Southwestern Jewish Press, September 16, 1955, Page 6

By Sheridan Hegland
Member, State Legislature

In September 1961, a large new university may open here, the University of California at San Diego.  We’ll call it UCSD.

The State University already operates large branches in Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.) and at Berkeley (U.C.)

There is a good chance that the dream will come true. Thousands of San Diego County youngsters can live at home and get their college education at a public university. To leave home and go to Los Angeles or Berkeley, or even to some other state, is expensive.

In 1965, the experts say, about 17,000 local youngsters will have the grades, the ability and the gumption to want a college or university education.

So rapid is population growth all voer the state that vase expansion is needed. That’s why Gov. Knight has called for a large bond issue in 1956 to finance, in part, this expansion.

This Spring the State Assembly passed unanimously the “Hegland Resolution.”  It called for the Board of Regents of the university of California to study the feasibility of a branch in San Diego County. The study is under way and the results will be reported to the Legislature in 1957.

Co-authors of the Resolution were Assemblyman Jack Schrade of El Cajon and Frank Luckel of San Diego and Assemblywoman Wanda Sankary of San Diego.

A legislative committee will conduct an independent study.  If the branch is feasible and necessary, the Legislature will have to vote funds to build it and operate it. Cost of a university is not carried by property owners, but by the State’s General Fund, mostly by sales taxes.

Some people feel it would be better to expand State College into a university.  But others think we’ll need both institution. This is one of the questions not settled.

Last week I toured the campus of the University at Santa Barbara. It overlooks the coast.  New, beautiful, large buildings, are being constructed.

I hope if U.C.S.D—this new university—is built, that its campus will be beautiful, functional and useful.

Slenderella Chain To Open Here Soon

Southwestern Jewish Press, September 16, 1955, Page 5

In keeping with a comprehensive expansion program throughout America and Europe, Slenderella International, world’s largest figure-proportioning chain, will open its first salon in San Diego at 1152 Seventh Ave. on Monday, Sept. 26th.

Miss Eloise English, former Lt. Commander in the WAVES, Slenderella’s national supervisor, announces that this is the first of several new salons to be added in the San Diego area.  There are nine salons operating now in Greater Los Angeles, according to Miss English.

The San Diego salon, 85th in the Slenderella chain, will be managed by Miss Helene Russell, beauty authority from New York. The tastefully-decorated local salon will be able to handle 260 women per day.

Funded by a man, Slenderella caters exclusively by a woman.  Larry L. Mack, president of the firm, expects to do a $12,000,000 business this year. European salons are now operating in Paris and London and branches will be established in Dusseldorf, Zurich and Brussels in December.  The first South American salon will open its doors early in 1956 in Caracas, Venezuela.
