High Holy Day Services At Tifereth Israel Synagogue

Our High Holy Day schedule of Services will begin with the Evening Service at 8:00 p.m., on Friday, September 16. Cantor Joseph Cysner and an augment ted Synagogue Choir will chant this and all other Services of this season.
The first day of Rosh Hashanah will be observed on Saturday, September 17, beginning at 8:00 in the morning. Minha will be held at 6:30 p.m. to be followed by the Evening Service. A special Children’s Service for Rosh Hashanah will be held on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. All children are cordially invited, and no admission cards are necessary. The second day of the New Year Festival will be observed on Sunday, September 18, beginning at 8:00 in the morning, with the Minha at 6:30 p.m.
The subjects for Rabbi Levens’ sermons on Rosh Hashanah will be based on his recent tour of Europe and Israel. He will speak at the first Evening Service on the topic, “So This is Brotherhood.” On Saturday morning, he will discuss “The European Outlook,” and on Sundayh, his subject will be “The Future of European Jewry.”
The schedule for Yom Kippur will be as follows: Sunday, September 26, Kol Nidre, 7:00 p.m; Monday, Sept 26, Morning Services, 8:00- a.m. with Yiskor (Memorial services) at 10:30 a.m. Continuing his series of discussions, Rabbi Levens will speak Sunday night on the subject, “Israel Power of the Spirit”; and Monday morning on “Israel’s Spiritual Problem.” Children’s Service for HYom Kippur will take place at 2:00 p.m.

Hadassah’s “Parade of Progress” To Be Shown Sept. 22

A change has been made in the date of the first meeting of the San Diego Chapter of Hadassah. It will now be held on Thursday, September 22nd, at Mission Valley Country Club. The meeting will feature a delightful luncheon to be served at 12:00 o’clcok noon and a most unusual program titled “Parade of Projects.”
Mrs. Gabriel Berg, program chairman, announces that in addition to the event being wonderfully entertaining, it will bring to the viewer through pantomime and narration, the knowledge of why Hadassah is rightfully known as “The Health Arm of Israel.” Working with Mrs. Berg and serving on the program committee is Mrs. David Schissell.
Costumes that won awards at this years Southern Pacific Coast Regional Conference will be worn by Mmes. Gerald Kobernick, Robert Strauss, Al Solomon, Larry Lawrence, Norman Gelman, David Sapp, Lewis Solomon, Louis Soma, Burton Ross, Murray Samuels, Al Slayen, Manuel Haffner, Leon Solomon, Ben Snyder, Daniel Orlansky, Victor Selten, David Block, Alfred Bobrof, Rodin Horrow, Rudolph Hess, Ray Lieberman, and Sam Stein. Also young Misses Judy Kaplan, Linda Hess, and Master Jonathan Sapp. Narrator for the program will be Mrs. Morton Thaler.
Mrs. Edward Kitaen, membership chairman and general chairman for this event, wishes to remind all new, prospective new and transferred members that they are invited to attend the meeting as guests of Hadassah. Those who have not already done so, are urged to contact her at HO 9-1389 with the names of any prospective members so that she may personally extend an invitation to them. Mrs. Harry Snyder, hospitality chairman, and her committee will be on hand at the meeting to welcome all newcomers.

Annual Cemetery Memorial Service

On Sunday, Sept. 25th at 1:20 p.m., Congregations Beth Jacob, Tifereth Israel and Beth Israel will join at the Home of Peace Cemetery for the annual Memorial Service in reverence of our beloved dead.
The services will be conducted by Rabbis Stern, Levens and Cohn, assisted by the Cantors of the three Congregations. All members of the community are invited to attend and pay tribute to all of our loved ones who live in eternal memory.

Wednesday, Oct.5th at one o’clock is the time scheduled for the first regular meeting of the Hebrew Home for the Aged Auxiliary. The meeting will be held in the new building which is located at 4075 54th St. The new home may be reached by no. 7 bus which runs up University avenue. Signs will be posted on the corner of 54th and University avenues.
Co-chairmen Zelma Goldstein, Betty Feller and Lillian Weiss have completed plans for the gigantic Rummage Sale which is to take place at the Home, 2750 4th Ave., starting October 10th. However, it is very important that all rummage be at the Home at least one week preceding that date. Sunday, Sept. 5th has been designated as “General Pick-Up Day” and a call to any one of the district chairman will bring the Truck to your door. Pick up your telephone and call Mrs. Goldstein AT 2-7345, Mrs. Feller at AT 2-7344 or Mrs. Weiss AT 1-4571 and a genial Alpha Phi Pi member will be glad to relieve you of any contribution no matter how large or how small. Jewish Community Center

Mr. Irving Mortin, program director of the Jewish Community Center met with members of the staff to plan for the season’s activities which will be inaugurated after the holidays.
In order to raise money for the benefit of the Centr, the Yo-Ma-Co club members are requesting people in the community to donate clothing or other articles for the big Rummage Sale which they will sponsor in the near future.
Rummage may be brought to the Center, 3227 El Cajon Blvd., or contact any Yo-Ma-Co member for pick-up.

Registrations Set for Sunday and Hebrew Schools
Registration for Sunday and Hebrew Schools will take place Sunday, Sept. 11 from 10 to 12 a.m. (sic), according to Ruth Okun, newly elected president of the P.T.A.
All children of members can attend the schools free of charge. Non-members will be charged $30 per year tuition. Registration fee to all is only $5 per child.
Classes this year will start on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. sharp. Because of this late starting date, youth services will be instituted as reported elsewhere in these columns.

Junior Services Set
For the first time, Beth Jacob will institute a Junior service for the High Holidays, conducted by the Hebrew School children themselves, held in the schule proper. The services follow:
Rosh Hashanah Service~ Sunday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m.
Yom Kippur Service~Mon., Sept 26 at 2:30 p.m.
Succoth Service~Sun., Oct 2 at 9:45 a.m. (in the meeting room).
Simchas Torah Service ~ Sat., Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. (In conjunction with adults).
All children, with or without a knowledge of Hebrew, and their firneds are cordially invited to participate Cantor Dubner has innovated a children’s choir.

Beth Israel Religious School Opens

Registration for the Fall Semester at Beth Israel Religious School will be held Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, September 21 and 22, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. The three Congregations and their Rabbis are united in their desire to see every Jewish child in the community enrolled in a Religious School to receive a Jewish education
While attendance at the Religious School at Temple Beth Israel is limited to the children of members, it is the policy of the Temple never to turn away a child because of the parent’s inability to pay. Arrangements for enrollment of any child may be made during the Registration Days.
Classes will begin on Sunday, Sept. 25th, at 9:45 a.m. Improved classroom facilities and an augmented highly skilled teaching staff assure a splendid Jewish religious education to all children.
Hebrew School Sessions of the Temple will begin Monday, Sept. 19th at 3:30 p.m., and will be held every Monday and Wednesday. All parents of children of 4th grade level and over are urged to enroll them for Hebrew instruction on Sept. 19th.
