Ron Prosor named as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations

LONDON (WJC) — Ron Prosor, 58, currently Israel’s ambassador in Britain, has been appointed as the country’s new permanent representative to the United Nations in New York. According to media reports, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s National Security Advisor Uzi Arad is expected to succeed Prosor in London. Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan decided last week to turn down Netanyahu’s offer to serve as Israel’s UN ambassador.

The current UN envoy is Meron Reuven, who replaced Gabriela Shalev temporarily after Netanyahu and Lieberman failed to agree on a candidate. Prosor, previously served as director-general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry and has gained wide recognition at home during his tenure in London, where he notably worked on fighting efforts to delegitimize Israel.
