SAN DIEGO  (Press Release) — Dr. Lawrence (Larry) Friedman – a longtime friend and trustee of the Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) and La Jolla Playhouse – passed away Monday, June 21,  in his home at the age of 69.

Friedman served as the former MOPA board president and was a member of the Board of Trustees at La Jolla Playhouse.

At UC San Diego, Friedman served as associate dean for clinical affairs since 2014 and was a professor of pediatrics and medicine.

Friedman is survived by his sister Margie Friedman, brother Gerry Friedman and nephew Kenny Friedman (fiancé Jillian Lipstone), along with his many friends and colleagues. Deborah Klochko, executive director and chief curator at MOPA, commented:  “We are saddened to share that our dear friend, Dr. Larry Friedman passed away on Monday. From myself and everyone at MOPA, we would like to send our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to his family and team at UCSD.  As a compassionate doctor, Larry dedicated his life to helping others and making our community a better place. As a MOPA supporter of 14 years, trustee and former board president, Larry had a monumental impact on the lives of MOPA fellow board members, staff and all those who knew him. He enjoyed traveling with the Museum’s Collector’s Salon and was a steadfast advocate for the decade-long San Diego Human Rights Watch Film Festival among other programs.  He will be missed and we will keep him and his family in our hearts forever.”

Debby Buchholz, Managing Director of La Jolla Playhouse, said:  “Dr. Larry Friedman was a dedicated La Jolla Playhouse board member and a respected community leader. Alongside his accomplished career at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Larry was an avid supporter of the arts. He was thrilled when the Playhouse delivered hand-sewn masks to front-line health workers and proudly distributed hundreds of them personally. He was a warm, gregarious and generous man who will be greatly missed by everyone at La Jolla Playhouse. We join our colleagues at UC San Diego and MOPA in extending our deepest condolences to Larry’s family.”
