Now hear this: “Would you believe it – we’re proud of you!” thusly ran the letter of invitation sent to Junior Hostesses of the USO-Jewish Welfare Board for their many hours of service to USO, for a dinner in their honor at the Admiral Kidd Officers Club Dec. 29th. Gala evening, much fun, much food, many laughs!

Tripping the light fantastic at the Hadassah Presentation ball wee Servicemen Roy Wolf, Bill Lad, Al Kalish, Warren DeFren, and Paul Hutt. Through the generosity of Hadassah members, tickets were purchased and donated to the Military Personnel and used con much gusto. Mmm, so many pretty girls!

Word reaches us from Tokyo, Japan, and Howard Taylor. Two words, in fact, OH MY! Howie’s living it up and learning to eat his borsht with chop sticks. He sends us a large hello and hopes to return to San Diego soon in tip top shape.

The next meeting will take place on January 11th, and will be closed to members only, due to the electgion of officers for the forthcoming year. It is absolutely essential that every member couple be on hand as there will be matters discussed vital to the interest of all.
Byron Sharpe, Co-Chairman of the Installation Committee, has announced that the installation will be held on February 19th at the Lafayette Hotel, in the Terrace Room. The committee will be glad to accept reservations.
Entertainment Chairman Henry Levien, and his committee, have done an excellent job in providing entertainment for the pleasure of the guests and members.

New Cancer Head

Mrs. Mary Reed Harris yesterday was appointed executive director of the San Diego County Branch of the American Cancer Society, W. Wade Ambrose, president, announced.
Mrs. Harris has devoted many years to San Diego community services and has had varied experience in community organization work locally.

Center Group Begins Planning for Building

With tentative plans set for ground breaking ceremonies on June 10, 1956, for the new Jewish Community center building at 54th Street, Center Building Committee members traveled to Phoenix and Tucson to study the new Community Centers in those cities this week.
In the party making the study and survey are Edward Breitbard, President of theCenteer; William Schwartz, Sidney Rose, Chairman of the Building Committee; Maury Novak, Program Committee Chairman; Rodin Horrow and George Lykos, architect for the new Community building.
After this trip and an additional visit to the Los Angeles Community Center, Lykos expects to begin preparation of the preliminary plans, and have the complete plans worked out before the ground breaking ceremonies on June 10. It is anticipated that the Center will contain, among other features, a fine library, gymnasium, swimming pool, meeting rooms, craft rooms, office facilities for all the Jewish agencies in the community, and locker rooms. One of the outstanding features of the new building will be a modern nursery school which will hold a minimum of forty children.

On Wednesday, January 18, at 8 p.m., the National Council of Jewish Women will present its next Coffee Chat. The Garden Room of the Mission Valley Country Club will be the scene of an unusual presentation involving members of the International Relations Committee, whose chairman is Mrs. Eugene Sachs.
The guest speaker will be Mr. Netanel Lorch, information officer of the Council of Israel in Los Angeles. He will discuss the Middle East situation.
Hot off the press will be some Israeli songs by Council’s talented Glee Club, under the direction of Mrs. Harvey Furgatch.

New members of the Bay City B’nai B’rith Chapter will be initiated at the Tifereth Israel Synagogue on Monday, January 9th. Co-Chairmen Jean Schiller and Rose Okmin have planned an impressive ceremony for this occasion.
Mrs. Joseph A. Stone, 4th Vice President of District No. 4 B’nai B’rith Women, will be the guest speaker.
Refreshments for the evening are being provided by Rose Schwartz and Love Sacks. Mrs. Rose Felsman, President, urges all members and friends to attend.

A Family fun day Jamboree for residents of Point Loma, Loma portal and Ocean Beach will be held on Jan. 8th at 2 p.m. in the Portuguese Hall, 2818 Addison St.
The Family fun day Jamboree features Berwin, the Great, Lanky Nate Natwick, Round dancing and singing.
Registration for the ongoing adult and children’s program will be taken during the Jamboree. Admission is free and all families are invited.

Senior Adult Program Proves Popular – The Jewish Community center with the cooperation of the National council of Jewish Women are conducting a popular senior adult or “golden age” program. The group meets every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The next meeting on Sunday, Jan. 8th, will be held at the Jewish Community Center, 3227 El Cajon Blvd. Mrs. Mary Imberman is the group worker in charge of this program. The group is open to all who are “young at heart.”

Leadership Skills Course To Be Given At Jewish Community Center – a skills-leadership course for volunteers, leaders, officers and potential leaders will be given by the Jewish Community Center starting the last week in January.
Organizations wishing to send potential leaders to this course should apply at the Center right away. The course will cover such skilled areas as arts, crafts, music, drama, dance, story telling, camp crafts, discussion leading and others. There will be no charge for the course. An interview and application is necessary.

Mrs. Berg Elected To National Women’s U.J.A. Committee

Mrs. Gabriel Berg last week joined the charmed circle of fifty of America’s outstanding Jewish women elected to the Executive Committee of the National Women’s Division of the united Jewish Appeal.
San Diego’s outstanding Jewish woman for many years, Marie Berg, joins Eli H. Levenson in gaining national recognition for the first time for San Diego. MRs. Berg will represent the Jewish women of the Pacific Coast on the Executive Committee, and has been invited to attend its first meeting on January 23 in New York City.
Prominent in both civic and Jewish community affairs for many years, Mrs. Berg was 1955 Women’s Division Chairman, and did an outstanding service to the community in maintaining the Women’s Division record. She is also a member and former vice-president of the Board of the United Jewish Fund; Secretary of the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies, former President of the President’s Council, and is past president of Hadassah.
During the height of the displaced persons’ immigration to San Diego, Mrs. Berg served as co-chairman of the Emigre Committee.
