San Diego County Registrar Tells Final Election Results

Thursday, Dec. 8: With 100 percent of the votes in San Diego County’s 2,718 precincts counted, these were the final results in eight races involving Jewish candidates:  Sara Jacobs was reelected to Congress over the challenge of Stan Caplan.  Jordan Marks defeated fellow Jewish candidate Barbara Bry for the position of San Diego County Assessor/ Recorder/ Clerk.  Dr. Jen Campbell retained her 2nd San Diego City Council District 2 seat over a challenge from Linda Lukacs.  Peter Singer was defeated for a Superior Court judgeship by Pete Murray.  Julie Bronstein was defeated for reelection to the San Dieguito Union High School District by Phan Anderson.  Shana Hazan was elected to the San Diego Unified School District Board Seat B.   Former San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald defeated Dante Garcia Pamintuan by 61 votes for the Sweetwater Union High School District Board.  Marla Strich was reelected to the Encinitas Union High School District.

Monday, Nov. 21:
There are now 11,000 votes remaining to be counted, with the next report not due until December 8, when final results will be certified.  There has been no change in the standings since Nov. 16:  Jewish candidates who have won or are winning their races, per below, include Sara Jacobs (Congress), Jordan Marks (Assessor/ Recorder/ Clerk), Jennifer Campbell (San Diego City Council), Shana Hazan (San Diego Unified School Board), Marla Strich (Encinitas Union High School Board), and Marti Emerald (Sweetwater Union High School Board).  Those who lost or were losing included Barbara Bry (Assessor/Recorder Clerk), Peter Singer (Superior Court Judge Office 36), and Julie Bronstein (San Dieguito Union High School District).

Wednesday, Nov. 16, update :  With 15,000 votes remaining to be counted, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs was definitely re-elected and Jordan Marks had captured the triple office of County Assessor, Recorder and Clerk, defeating former San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry.  This was so because Jacobs had polled 54,531 more votes than her opponent at the conclusion of Wednesday’s counting, while Marks, currently the chief deputy assessor, had outpaced Bry by 27,446 votes.  Even if their opponents received every single vote still remaining to be counted, Jacobs and Marks still would win.  As for other Jewish candidates who ran in the Nov. 8 election, they were in the same relative positions as San Diego Jewish World previously had reported. Jennifer Campbell was winning her bid for reelection to the San Diego City Council.  Shana Hazan was ahead in the San Diego Unified School Board race, incumbent Julie Bronstein was losing in the San Dieguito Union High School District, Marti Emerald was ahead in the Sweetwater Union High School District, and incumbent Marla Strich appeared headed for victory in the Encinitas Union High School District.  Peter Singer was losing his bid to be elevated from a Superior Court Commissioner to a Superior Court Judge.

Monday, Nov. 14, update:  All the candidates mentioned below in the Sunday, Nov. 13, update remained in the same relative positions following counting today.  There are 80,000 ballots throughout the county remaining to be counted, with the next update from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters expected to be posted by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16.

Sunday, Nov. 13, update: After another day of counting, and with 165,000 ballots left for the San Diego County Registrar of Voters to tabulate, Jewish candidates were in the same relative position they were on Saturday, to wit: Sara Jacobs was headed for reelection in the 51st Congressional District; Shana Hazan was winning the District B contest for the San Diego Unified School Board; Marla Strich was retaining her seat on the Encinitas Union High School Board;  Marti Emerald was ahead in the Area 5 contest for the Sweetwater Union High School District; Jennifer Campbell was being reelected in  San Diego City Council District 2, and Jordan Marks was ahead in the contest against fellow Jew Barbara Bry.  Two other Jewish candidates who were losing were incumbent Julie Bronstein in Area 5 of the San Dieguito Union High School District, and Peter Singer in the judgeship contest for Office 36 of the San Diego County Superior Court.  The counting will continue on Monday, Nov. 14.

Saturday, Nov 12, update: At the end of counting by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters today, there still were 250,000 ballots remaining to be tabulated.  Of the nine Jewish we’ve been following in a variety of races, six were winning and three were losing.  Winning were incumbent Sara Jacobs in a congressional race; Shana Hazan for the San Diego Unified School Board; Marti Emerald for the Sweetwater Union High School Board; incumbent Marla Strich for the Encinitas Union School Board, incumbent Jennifer Campbell for the San Diego City Council, and Jordan Marks for the County Assessor/ Recorder/ Clerk.   Losing were Barbara Bry, who opposed Marks in the assessor’s race; Peter Singer in a Superior Court judgeship race, and incumbent Julie Bronstein in the San Dieguito Union High School District.  Counting will resume on Sunday, Nov. 13.

Friday, Nov. 11, update:   Following counting today with 325,000 ballots remaining to be counted county-wide, former San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald surged ahead of her opponent, Dante Garcia Pamintuan, in the race for a seat on the Sweetwater Union High School District.  The vote count as of Friday was Emerald 5,589 to Pamintuan 5,452.  The results in other contests listed below did not change the candidates’ relative positions.  Jennifer Campbell in San Diego’s 2nd City Council District, and Shana Hazan in District B of the San Diego Unified School District both declared victory today. The San Diego County Registrar of Voters said counting will continue on Saturday, Nov. 12.

SAN DIEGO — I certainly don’t know every fellow Jew who ran for public office in San Diego County.   But here is how those with whom I am familiar did in Tuesday’s election, according to the final election night semi-official returns released on Wednesday.  More results are expected on Thursday.

Congress — Sara Jacobs was easily reelected to a second term.

San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/ Clerk — Jordan Marks, chief deputy assessor, was defeating former San Diego City Councilwoman Barbara Bry in an all-Jewish contest.

San Diego City Council —  Jennifer Campbell defeated Linda Lujacs in the 2nd District by 14,191 votes to 11,539.

Superior Court Judge — Peter Singer, a Superior Court Commissioner and former president of the temple Adat Shalom Men’s Club, was losing to Pete Murray.  He had 223,593 votes compared to 241,401 for Murray.

Encinitas Union School District — Marla Strich retained her seat on this board.

San Diego Unified School District — Shana Hazan easily won an open seat on the 5-member board.

San Dieguito Union High School District — Incumbent Julie Bronstein was losing her reelection bid to Phan Anderson.  She received 2,674 votes while Anderson polled 3,167.

Sweetwater Union High School District — Former San Diego City Councilwoman Marti Emerald appeared unsuccessful in a bid to return to public life.  Dante Garcia Pamintuan was defeating her narrowly, 4,603 votes to her 4,545.

  1. Thanks for the updates, Don.
It’s heartening to see so many quality candidates rising to the top as final votes are tallied.
Like so many of our Jewish candidates, I want to restore security and civility to our schools and public discourse.
During these Covid years filled with so much uncertainty and fear, our electeds carry the additional responsibility to restore peace and certainty to our schools and public arena.
It’s time to put our kids and community first.
    Happy Holidays. Marti Emerald
