SAN DIEGO (Press Release) — On February 1, the Kindness Initiative assumed managing the G’mach San Diego Jewish Gift Closet warehouse operations and furniture exchange program.
G’mach, also known as the San Diego Jewish Gift Closet, is an organization that collects and distributes household goods such as clothing, furniture, and baby supplies to Jewish households in need at no cost. The organization founded 14 years ago in San Diego by Helene Bortz and Myrice Goldberg, has since grown to include additional social services beyond just the distribution of household goods.
Kindness Initiative believes that no Jewish household in San Diego County should face life’s challenges alone. Its service model strives to alleviate the pressures, complexity, and impact of poverty, by assisting its members to navigate and access the resources they need.
In 2020, recognizing their lack of formal social work training, G’mach transferred all client case work to the Kindness Initiative, an organization with professional case managers, a support volunteer corps, and a broad array of social service collaborations with local resources. More recently, the two founders sought to relieve themselves of warehouse responsibilities as well, and entered into an agreement to transfer G’mach’s warehouse operations to Kindness Initiative. The warehouse operations have been run by Karen Lock and a group of volunteers in the past few years, and they will continue to operate these activities.
Kindness Initiative can now offer a full range of social services to G’mach clients.
