Synagogue Has New Organization

A newly formed youth organization at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, the United Synagogue Youth, had its first meeting Saturday, January 14, with a great deal of success. It was a get-acquainted affair. The officers at this new club are J. Goldberg, president; Harriet Raphael, vice president; Dave Janowski, recording secretar; Jan Asner, corresponding secretary; Cliff Schrager treasurer, and Jerry Klein, sergeant at arms. The club members expect to have even more success at the coming dinner-dance on Feb. 4, which will be dressy dress. All high school kids wishing to attend please R.S.V.P. Jan Asner at JU-2-7133 by Jan. 30.

City of Hope Calls for Blood Donors

Operations of san Diego patients have been delayed due to the depletion of blood deposits at the City of Hope Bank. Enormous quantities of blood are used at City of Hope – especially in the Children’s Leukemia Wing. Won’t you and your friends donate blood for this emergency and be sure and specify it for “City of Hope.” The Red Cross Blood Bank will then transfer it to Duarte. If you wish to designate it for a particular patient phone Jeanne Camiel – BE 4-9595 or CY 5-2566 for advice.
In 1955 San Diegans received over $25,000.00 in services at City of Hope and this month another of our residents was admitted for treatment.

Paul Merkowitz, passed away on December 28, 1955. His wife and all his children were present at his bedside.
Mr. Merkowitz is survived by his wife, Sophia; two sons, Ike of Denver, Colo., and Samuel, of San Diego; three daughters, Bertha Fox of Detroit, Sadie Lapin of Pueblo, Colo., and Loraine J. Strickman of San Diego; thirteen grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Cypress View Mausoleum, on December 30th, with Rabbi Morton J. Cohn officiating.
Mr. Merkowitz was a member of the Beth Israel Congregation and the Masons, South Pueblo Branch.

Louis Lampert, 74 years of age, passed away January 6.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edward Binder and Mrs. Sydney Segal of San Diego—on son, Samuel Lampert of San Diego – 7 brothers and sisters in the East and 6 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Lewis Colonial Mortuary on Tuesday, January 10 at 1:00 p.m., with Rabbi Monroe Levens and Cantor Joseph Cysner officiating. Interment in Home of Peace Cemetery.

Children Will Be Seen And Heard At J.C.C. Women’s League Meeting

The next luncheon meeting of the Women’s League of the Jewish Center will be held at noon on Friday, Feb. 3rd, at the San Diego Hotel. Mrs. Adele Cohn, program chairman, promises unique entertainment in the form of a “Juvenile Jury” (5 to 9 years) with “Uncle Rus,” of Channel 6 as the MC.. Participants on the “Jury” will be Karen Zlotoff, Linda Pearl, Barry Levenson, Judy Baranov, Mark Hoffman and Terry Cohn. Guest panelists Jonathan Sapp and Lori Selten.
All mothers attending the meeting are invited to leave their youngsters with the baby sitter at the Community Center on El Cajon Blvd. A most unusual door prize is to be awarded some lucky winner. Admission will be $1.50. For reservations phone Sylvia Rost, AT 2-7586 or J.C.C. at AT 1-7744.
At the last meeting, Thelma Selten and Ruth Bobrof divulged plans for the dedication bazaar to be held at the new building site on June 10… a full day for the family with food, booths, free prizes, entertainment, movies and dancing for teenagers.
Ruth Okmin, representing the Couples Club, of the J.C.C. stated that in two years the club has grown from 19 couples to 40. The purpose of the club is purely social, no fund raising, just fun-raising. Dues are $2.00 a year per couple and newcomers are invited to join.

Now hear this: Our very capable Recruiting Assistant Sherry Newman has left our fair city to attend Stanford University. We’ll miss her sunny disposition and hope someone will step in soon and try to fill her shoes.

What with the fog keeping the girls at home, the ships keeping the boys at sea, suffice it to say, our Wednesday night USO dances at Temple Center are not exactly hanging out the Standing Room Only sign. However, the fog can’t last forever (oh no?) and every ship hits port sometime, so stiff upper lip, things will be hopping again shortly, and “Sixteen Tons” will live again.

Mrs. Jack Brisker, General Chairman for Hadassah’s Gigantic 1956 Rummage Sale of Sale, which begins on February 6th has announced that the location of this year’s event will be at the American Legion Hall, 2691 B St.
Bric-a0brac, antique wares and furniture and clothing will be offered for sale at great savings to the public. All funds raised will be used for Hadassah projects in this country and in Israel.

Senior Adults Get Club Room—The Senior Adult group of the Jewish Community Center in cooperation with the National Council of Jewish Women have been given a club room for their use in the Hebrew Home for the Aged. This club room will b used by members of the Senior Adult group during the week for a lounge, game room discussion and lecture room, music, dance, arts and crafts. Furnishing and decoration of the club room is being planned with the purpose of the room in mind. A regular arts and crafts group will be organized next Sunday lead by Mr. Robert Imberman. A folk Dance demonstration and lesson will be part of the program on Sunday Jan. 22. Mrs. Vivian Wohl of the Balboa Park Dancers will lead this program.
The San Diego Transit System has agreed to have a bus stop established going north in front of the Hebrew Home for the Aged and future site of the Center beginning Sunday, Jan. 22.

North Shore Center Extension – The North Shore Center Extension group has decided to emphasize Family Fun Day programs and Friendship groups for its children’s program in the future. The staff is planning to open this program on Jan. 29 with a Family Fun Day picnic in Presidio Park. For the adults, a Square Dance Hoe Down will be held on Saturday, Feb. 4.

The “Gaylarks,” the Young Adult group of the Jewish Community Center is sponsoring a big Western Round-up with Irving Mortin as the Square Dance Caller. The date is Tuesday evening January 24. All single men and women are invited to join the group regularly on Tuesday evening.
The members are eagerly looking forward to Feb. 11 and 12 when they will host the Long Beach Jewish Community Center’s Young Adult group. A dance and barbecue are being planned.

Point Loma – Loma Portal—Ocean Beach Extension – The Point Loma Loma Portal and Ocean Beach Extension program opened with a well attended Family Fun Day Jamboree. Children’s friendship groups will be organized as a result of this program and other Family Day programs will be held in the future.
Mrs. Dora Eber is acting coordinator of this group. Those wishing to be included in the children’s and adult program should contact Mrs. Eber at AC 3-6769. Staff is being assembled for the ongoing program.
Little Theatre – The creation of a Community Youth Theatre and an Adult Theatre group will be planned this Monday evening, Jan. 23rd at 8 p.m. in the Jewish Community Center. Those in the community who would like to participate in this group are welcome to attend this first meeting.

Globe Theatre Schedules “Time Out For Ginger”

Time Out For Ginger, the famous comedy about the complications that follow a teen-age girl’s decision to go out for her high school football team, is the next attraction for The Old Globe Theatre in Balboa Park. Produced by the San Diego Community Theatre and directed by Craig Noel, the rollicking play will be given nightly except Mondays at 8:30 , through January 29.
