OJAI, California (Press Release) — The Jewish Agency for Israel’s Chairman of the Executive Major General (Res.) Doron Almog last Wednesday visited Ojai-based Camp Ramah in California to meet with campers as well as with the organization’s Summer Camp Shlichim (Israeli emissaries), who are working to forge connections to Israel at the camp this season.
Camp Ramah in California is home to several Jewish Agency Summer Camp Shlichim, who have joined the staff at 158 camps across North America this season. The Shlichim, who impart their experience and skills while creating lasting bonds with campers, hail from all over Israel and come from a variety of backgrounds in a true display of the country’s diversity.
“It was heartening to see how Jewish Agency Summer Camp Shlichim at Camp Ramah in California are bringing the spirit of Israel to Ojai this summer, creating a special bond with campers and a connection to Israel. The deep impact of Shlichim is something that lasts long after the summer is over,” Almog said. “These Shlichim also return to Israel with a deeper appreciation of North American Jewry and a sense of Jewish peoplehood, making this a wonderful way to strengthen the ties between our next generation across Israel and world Jewry.”
Almog assumed his role as The Jewish Agency’s Chairman of the Executive in August 2022. He previously served as the Commander of the IDF Southern Command (2000-2003), and founded and still serves as Chairman of the Adi Negev-Nahalat Eran Rehabilitation Village, named after his son Eran, who died at a young age from Castelman’s disease. Almog was one of the torchbearers on Israeli Independence Day (2006), as a token of appreciation for his contribution to the development of the Negev. He is the recipient of the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement and Special Contribution to Society and the State (2016) and Chairman of the Israel Security Award Committee (2022).
