WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) is urging support for Congressman Colin Allred in his quest to oust Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.
Jewish and African-American Democrats have a long history of supporting each other in Congress over most issues. Schumer is Jewish; Allred is an African-American.
In a fundraising letter obtained by San Diego Jewish World, Schumer wrote, “With the retirement of Sen. Joe Manchin [D-West Virginia], we could hold every single seat we have and still lose Senate control That’s why it’s so important that we help Colin Allred defeat Ted Cruz in Texas. Polls are showing these two neck and neck, and Ted Cruz is the most vulnerable GOP senator in the country. We can win this race, but the GOP knows it too – they’re preparing to pour millions of dollars into Texas to lie about Colin’s record and try to stop us.”
Allred, a graduate of Baylor University played football for the Tennessee Titans, between 2007 and 2010, then enrolled at UC Berkeley School of Law. He went to work in the Department of Housing and Urban Development during the Obama administration, and later as a voting rights litigator in private practice. He was elected in 2018 to Congress and was assigned to the Foreign Affairs Committee. Recently, he voted to provide Israel with support after the Oct. 7 massacre of Israeli civilians by Hamas terrorists.
