Fund Campaign Moves Fast–$130,000 Pledged; “Still a Long Way to Go,” Roberts Says
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 13, 1956, Pages 1, 4

With the official opening of the 1956 United Jewish Fund campaign less than two weeks old, Milton Y. Roberts, Campaign Chairman, reported that over $130,000 or 55% of the goal had been pledged.

This indicated, according to Roberts, the fastest campaign since 1948.  Warning against optimism slowing down the campaign, Roberts in his statement urged every worker to continue immediate efforts to cover all of his prospects.

“In light of the headlines which we are reading in our papers every day, indicating the tense situation in Israel and the need for immigration of Jews out of Morocco, money must be forwarded immediately to the United Jewish Appeal,” Roberts said.  “Workers must continue the intense drive to bring in their pledges and contributors must make their gifts now.  Those who make a worker come back three or four times and those individuals who wait to make their pledge are doing a great harm to the campaign and to those whose lives are at stake.

Close to 200 were present at the Kick-Off Dinner meeting last week at the San Diego Hotel to hear Rabbi Israel Chodos of Los Angeles Temple Sinai.  $125,783 was announced as the amount raised through the Pace-Setters meeting and the Kick-Off Dinner by Morris W. Douglas, President of the Fund.

Highlight of the dinner was the presentation by Judey Karp and Mike Schwartz of checks in the sum of $250 in the regular campaign and $50 for the Special Survival Fund. This represented the gift of the children of Temple Beth Israel Religious School.

Rabbi Chodos, speaking of the need for giving, said, “We Jews must realize that by the great privilege of giving we will lift ourselves into the glorified atmosphere of the spirit. Unless you give, you shrivel into nothingness. We are not alone in this world – what happens to our brethren in Morocco and Tunisia inevitably affects us here. The world has been telescoped—what happens there, happens here.  We must give to the Survival Fund, for if Israel should vanish from the face of the earth, we here, in San Diego, will suffer.

General Campaign Chairman Roberts, in announcing the totals raised to date, stated that the campaign was 35 percent ahead of the 1955 campaign.  Over $22,000 has been raised for the Special Survival Fund and will immediately be forwarded to the United Jewish Appeal for use in North Africa and Israel as soon as payments are made.  The $51,600 goal for the Special Survival Fund will be used toward the national goal of $25,000,000 to relieve Israel of the costs of the immigration of 45,000 Jews from Morocco and their resettlement in Israel.

While the Pace-Setters Division, working under the leadership of Harry Sugarman, continued to bring in the larger gifts in order to swell the total of the campaign, the Campaigners Division, chaired by William Schwartz, began its work this week. First reports, according to Schwartz, indicate increases of at least 50 percent in most gifts in the over $250 category.

All divisions, with the exception of the lower California campaign, are now underway and it is hoped to bring the campaign to a successful conclusion by May 31st.
