Southwestern Jewish Press, April 13, 1956, Page 7
The Jewish War Veterans f the United States of America today announced that they have confirmed reports that United States Air Force personnel are not “free U.S. citizens” at the Daharan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
JWV said that among the fact learned in conjunction with the base to justify its conclusion were:
A. United States Air Force Chaplains do not wear the insignia of their religious denomination.
B. A high official of the Catholic Church on a mission to the base was obliged to divest himself of his clerical identification during his visit to the base.
C. The American Flag is not flying over the base.
D. Religious services on the base may be held only clandestinely and Jewish service personnel are not even allowed to enter the country.
In making the announcement JWV pointed out “one sees in the administration of the Daharan Base a serious slight to the American Flag and a violation of the inherent rights of all Americans to worship their religion without fear. Thus, we urge that immediate steps be taken to crrect these violations of American rights.”

Meet Monty
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 13, 1956, Page 8
Seaman Monty Assim Houssain, stationed at the Naval Training Base in San Diego, looks like any other American boy of Jewish faith… except that he isn’t. Twenty year old Monty, whom we interviewed, is a Canadian whose father is a practicing Moslem; his mother, a Jewess; his brother and sister, Mormons. He has informed the Bureau of Naval Personnel that he wishes to be listed as Jewish instead of Moselm.
Monty was a guest at the USO-JWB Passover Seder two weeks ago, with his Jewish buddies.
Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, Monty served five years with the Canadian armed forces after graduating from high school. His ambition to become a doctor led him to enlist in our Navy, where he is being trained as a hospital corpsman. He feels that the United States (he has filed for citizenship) and the U.S Navy offers a career which he could not obtain anywhere else.
His father, a native of Canada, met Monty’s mother on a trip to Palestine, married her in Jerusalem, and brought her back to Canada. The children were given the freedom of choice in religion.
You can see by the above that Monty never takes the easy way. He knows what he wants and we have the feeling that nothing will stop him from realizing his goals – M.K.
