Campaign at 70% of Goal; Drive to Close May 20
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 27, 1956, Pages 1, 5
Spurred on by the opening of campaigns in the areas, the $104 minimum Women’s Division luncheon, gifts from an employee group, a treasury gift from the Junior Charity League, and a $300 gift from the children of the Religious School of Temple Beth Israel, the campaign of the United Jewish Fund continued to advance towards its $226,000 objective.
Milton Y. Roberts, General Campaign Chairman, reported that the 1956 drive for the regular campaign and the United Jewish Appeal Special Survival Fund had almost reached the figure of $163,000—the amount achieved in the entire year of 1955. Roberts announced that the campaign was still showing a better than 35% increase over last year’s giving. He urged that everyone who had not yet given to this great cause do so immediately so that money might be forwarded to the United Jewish Appeal to meet the emergency.
Oceanside Shows 100% Increase
The two week period was the kick-off in the North County area and in Coronado last week. Both were successful in keeping the percentage of increase over last year’s effort at the 35% mark, according to Alex Maisel, area chairman.
In the North County the dinner meeting opening which hear Yaacov Adam, a Commander in the Israeli Navy, started the drive in Carlsbad, Oceanside, Vista, Escondido, Fallbrook and Poway.
At the meeting itself over $3,500 was raised from 30 individuals in attendance; teams were formed and work was immediately begun.
The North County area in 1955 raised $3,100 for the United Jewish Fund; it is anticipated that 1956 campaign, under the leadership of Maisel and Maurice Levy, President of the North County Jewish Community Center, would show an increase of at least 100%.
Members of the North County Area committee responsible for the dinner were: Maisel, Levy, Mrs. Maurice Levy, Mrs. Howard Gladstone, Mrs. Leon Reichel, Mrs. Lester Zaker and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gardner. Others who helped at the dinner were Miss Suzie Simon, Miss July Simon, Miss Lois Collen, Miss Phylis Gelfard and Mrs. Rose Queen.
Coronado has 30% Increase
Across the bay, Stuart Ferer, Chairman of the Coronado area, opened up the campaign at a “commee meeting” at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kipperman, to which over 30 residents responded. Guest of honor for the evening and principal speaker was Mr. Raanon Sivan, Israel Consul for the 11 Western states who spoke about the crisis in the Middle East.
There again a 30% increase in gifts was shown and a committee aiding Ferer consisting of Lewis Kipperman, Erwin Sonnabaum, Irving Arenson and Arthur L. Cohen was formed to organize the solicitation. Present at the meeting was Mr. G.K. Williams, publisher and editor of the Coronado Journal, who started the campaign rolling with his gift of $100 to the drive.
Drive to Close May 20th
Roberts and his campaign committee expressed satisfaction at the speed of the campaign, and continued to urge every worker whether it be in the Pace-Setter, Campaigners, Women’s, Area or Christian Division to keep working in order to close the campaign officially by May 20th. Roberts stated that if the drive could hit the $200,000 mark by May 20th, there would be no question that the goal of $226,000 would be reached by the end of the year.
He stated that money would be forwarded to the United Jewish Appeal and to other overseas and national agencies as fast as it came in. “The needs this year,” Roberts said, “are greater than ever before, both nationally and in Israel. It is our hope to be able to send to the 45 overseas, national and local agencies the money that helps them to continue their efforts on behalf of us all. Therefore we plead with you if you have not as yet done so, make your gift today.
