SAN DIEGO — Resilience in action. Leadership in action. Joy in action. This is what you witness every day at Hillel.
Hillel of San Diego is incredibly proud and deeply grateful for the unwavering support and unity demonstrated by the San Diego State University community in response to the recent antisemitic incident at the Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) fraternity house. Acts of hate like this are reprehensible and have no place on our campus—or in our society. Yet, in the face of darkness, SDSU’s leadership responded swiftly, decisively, and compassionately, bringing hope and healing to our Jewish community.
From the moment the incident came to light, SDSU’s leadership took immediate action. Under the guidance of President Adela de la Torre, the university swiftly condemned the act of hate and launched a thorough investigation, treating it with the urgency and gravity it deserved. In a powerful display of solidarity, SDSU officials worked closely with Hillel and AEPi to facilitate the cleanup of the vandalized property and ensure the safety of students. Hillel stood alongside students—supporting police and university investigations and providing meals for those impacted for several days, thanks to the generosity of our Hillel of San Diego board.
This strong response was made possible by SDSU’s proactive commitment to combating antisemitism—embodied in its Presidential Task Force on Strengthening Community and Combating Antisemitism. Comprising university officials, student leaders, and representatives from Hillel and other Jewish organizations, this task force has played a vital role in fostering a safe and inclusive campus environment. Their forward-thinking efforts laid the groundwork for the university’s rapid, coordinated response—proving that when we stand together, we overcome hate with resilience and unity.
It is also with great pride that we mark the beginning of Jewish Heritage Month at SDSU—a clear affirmation of the university’s dedication to celebrating Jewish history, culture, and contributions. This month’s events and programs create meaningful opportunities for learning, celebration, and dialogue—enriching our campus and reinforcing our shared commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The month began with our Greek Life Shabbat at Hillel, where nearly 100 students came together to celebrate their Jewish identity and the power of community. As one student shared:
“We aren’t afraid. We are much stronger than any hate we may experience. My favorite part about being Jewish is the community we’ve created, right here.”
Indeed.
As we enter this week’s Purim festivities, let us remember: the next generation of Jewish leaders is extraordinary, and our Jewish community is stronger than ever.
