Kuchel Sponsors Resolution Outlawing Discrimination Against American Jews
Southwestern Jewish Press, July 13, 1956. Page 1
The Southern California Division of the American Jewish Congress today hailed
the action of Senator Kuchel who co-sponsored Senate Resolution No. 298, aimed
at outlawing the discrimination practiced against American Jews by Saudi Arabia
and other Arab States.
As part of its spreading campaign of bigotry, Saudi Arabia which would not
permit American Jews to enter that country to serve in American military forces
or other American agencies, prohibited the wearing of religious insignia by
U.S. Christian chaplains of any denomination and forbade any public mention or
announcement of Christian church services for members of our own Armed Forces
at the Dhahran Base.
It was charted that acquiescence in these and other acts of discrimination by
agencies of the U.S. Government constitute an abrogation and denial of the
religious freedom which has heretofore been accepted as the inalienable right
of every American citizen.
The resolution sponsored by Senator Kuchel calls upon the President to proclaim
that the United States “tolerates no distinction based on religious faith among
its own citizens” and “that it regards any such distinctions directed against
United States citizens as incompatible with the relations that should exist
among friendly nations.” It also calls for an end to religious discrimination by any agency of the United States in “assigning
any otherwise qualified American citizen to military, diplomatic or other
service within any foreign country solely because of that country’s objection
on grounds of religious affiliation.”
The resolution states that every treaty, convention or Executive Agreement made
by the United States should expressly provided that there be no religious
discrimination in the operation of the treaty, convention or agreement.
The resolution which was introduced by Senator Lehman is co-sponsored by the following Senators, in addition to senator
Kuchel: Douglas (Illinois), Langer (North Dakota), Morse (Oregon), Payne
(Maine), Jackson (Washington.)

Community Chest Sets Campaign Goal
Southwestern Jewish Press, July 13, 1956, Page 1
A record goal of $2,300,000 for the 1956 United Success Drive was set Monday in
Balboa Park by over 350 San Diego City and County citizens. Jack Thompson is chairman for the campaign
for the Community Chests of Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Coronado, Oceanside and San
Diego area.
The figure was set by those attending the annual meeting after discussion on
the basis of reports of need figures presented by presidents of the five Chests
and an estimated fund raising potential submitted by Thompson.
The need figure of $2,296,540 was determined by members of budget committees of
each Chest participating in the fall drive through detailed investigation of
each budget submitted. The final requests made by each agency were sliced to
meet minimum essentials tht would allow adequate operation of the service
provided. A total of these figures was submitted to the public as the overall
need to support local health, welfare and recreational services.
An estimated figure of $2,300,000 was presented to the public as the amount of
money members of the Campaign Cabinet felt could be raised in the campaign this
fall.
Drive leaders pointed out that San Diego is the only place in the nation where
the public is responsible for setting the goal.
