Council of Jewish Women Plan Nautical Party For Members
Southwestern Jewish Press, July 27, 1956, Pages 1, 3
National Council of Jewish Women, San Diego Section, will weigh anchor this year on August 1 with a “Council to the Rescue” party beside the pool at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Sims, 4884 E. Alder Dr., according to Mrs. Norman Mann, membership chairman. Carrying out the nautical “rescue” theme, hostesses will wear sailor caps, middy blouses and kerchief ties, according to Mrs. Jack Stein, Preident. The committee includes Mmes Dan Abramson, Bernard Arenson, Donald Benjamin, Robert Carlin, Stanley Foster, Richard Gilbert, Max Glaser, Rolf Haas, Lester Himmel, Milton Kifferstein, Robert Kreisler, Mac Leichter, Carl Prager, Albert Rosen, Burton Ross, Herman Schulman, Stanley Stein, David Sugarman, E Wasserman, Joseph Winston, Mal Winston, Bruce Witte and Hubert Wolff. Membership is under the supervision of Mrs. Herbert Reder. The décor , under the direction of Mrs. Irving Coleman, will be in red, white and blue with life preservers, model boats and other sea-faring objects lending a “salty” touch.
Program highlight of the afternoon will be songs by Sue Carson, popular Hollywood entertainer starring in the La Jolla Playhouse production of “Pal Joey.” Also appearing will be the Council Glee Club, in a script by Mmes Harvey Furgatch and Edward Merkin. Glee Club members are Mmmes. Ralph Cohen, Ben Kutchuk, Sidney Silverman, Sidney Steckel, Stanley Youkon, Furgatch and Merkin. Program Chairman is Mrs. Simon Reznikoff.
Mrs. Mann feels that one of the most important functions of this annual membership event is to familiarize both new and old members with the wide scope of Council’s activities in the fields of education and service. As Mrs. Mann points out, “Council is an international organization with 15 member nations, and it is local sections such as ours which make Council’s overall-program possible. And such National Council projects as Ship-a-Box, which provides educational play materials for children in Israel, and the Golden Age program, both of which celebrated their national tenth anniversaries this year, find their counterparts in our local Section activities. We also sponsor Ship-a-Box and other services for children here and abroad, and maintain a Senior Adult program in which we cooperate with Edgemoor, the Jewish Community Center and the Hebrew Home for the Aged.
