United Jewish Fund Plans For 23rd Annual Meeting
Southwestern Jewish Press, October 5, 1956, Pages  1, 10

The Allocations Committee of the United Jewish Fund heads a series of Fund activities which include the plans for the twenty-third Annual Meeting, the nomination of directors to fill the vacancies caused by the expiration of the term of twenty present directors, and the work of the Emigre Committee.

Dr. Joshua Rittoff, Chairman of the Allocations Committee, advised that the Committee had already met, received its material, and will meet again on October 16 to seriously begin its consideration of overseas and national agencies.  Over 75 of these organizations have requested inclusion in the United Jewish Fund for 1956.  They include organizations working in Israel, and Overseas; and National Agencies working in the fields of Community Relations, Religion, Cultural, Health and Welfare, and Service.  Among the major agencies which have been beneficiaries in the past and have inclusion for 1956 are: Hebrew Univ.-Technion, American Fund Israel Inst., Ezras Torah Fund, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, National Community Labor Israel, United Hias Service, American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans, Joint Defense Appeal, National Community Relations Council, City of Hope Building, Jewish Comm. Personal Serv., Leo N. Levi Memorial Hospital, American Academy Research, American Jewish Historical, B’nai  B’rith National Youth Service Agency, Histadrut Ivrith, Jewish Chautagua Soc. ; Jewish Publication Soc, Yiddish Scientific Inst.; Hebrew Theological College; Hebrew Union College; Jewish Theological Seminary; Union Orthodox Jewish Cong; Yeshiva University; American Association Jewish Education; Jewish Occupational Council; Jewish Welfare Board; Synagogue Council of America.

An open hearing for representatives of these agencies will be held on Sunday, October 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Rittoff reported. Responses are expected from at least 15 of the major agencies, who will be given the opportunity of presenting their cause to the committee and to the community as a whole.  Any member of the United Jewish Fund is invited to attend the meeting.

At the same time the Allocations Committee is working on its recommendations.  The Annual Meeting Committee, co-chaired  by William Schwartz and Dr.Walter Ornstein, is making plans for the twenty-third report meeting of the United Jewish Fund. Scheduled for Saturday, December 8, at the House of Hospitality in Balboa Park, the annual meeting will depart from tradition by serving a dessert and coffee instead of the usual dinner, according to Ornstein.  “Usually,” Ornstein said, “the annual meeting is attended by approximately 200 individuals and hit is hoped that the new plan will bring out the largest response of any annual meeting in the history of the Fund.  Plans are under way to bring an outstanding national figure as a principal speak for the occasion.”

In preparation for the Annual Meeting, the Nomination Committee has met and will recommend a slate of candidates to be presented for Directors of the Board. Twenty vacancies, caused by the expiration of the terms of directors, will be open for election.  Nominations by petition, as explained in the last issue of the  Southwest Jewish Press, will be accepted up to five days before the annual meeting, and will be added to the ballot, according to William Colt, Chairman.
