Jewish War Vet Leader Criticizes U.S. Stand on Israel

Southwestern Jewish Press, November 2, 1956, Pages 1, 3

LeRoy Seckler (left), JWV Post Commander; Ben Kaufman and Harry Apelman

Ben Kaufman, National Executive Director of the Jewish War Vets of the U.S. and one of only two living Jews holding the Congressional Medal of Honor, told a near capacity audience at the Friday night services, October 26, at Tifereth israel Synagogue, that the United States is failing in its duty and obligations to support Israel, its only ally and the only democracy in the Middle east. The attentive audience included representatives from almost every veteran organization in San Diego, including a full contingent of Spanish War Vets, and civic leaders.  Kaufman condemned the policy of the State Department which gave but lip service to the cause of Israel, whose citizens fought on the side of the Allies in the Great War.

He pointed out that in both World Wars I and II the Arabs fought on the side of our enemies and yet we are giving arms and aid to them while denying aid to Israel.  He called on the State Department to review its policy that has denied Jewish American citizens equal rights in the issuance of visas to the Middle East and called for the end of United States acquiescence to the Arabian boycott against firms having a Jewish ownership.

He called on all Jewish War Veterans of the U.S. so they can present a liaison in strength between the 24 million American veterans and the Jewish community. He spoke of the National Jewish War Veteran Shrine in Washington to honor the 22,000 Jews who have died in the service of their country.

On Saturday, October 27, Mr. Kaufman was the guest of honor at the Navy Recruit Brigade Review and presented certificates.

Allocations Committee Votes To Give U.J.A. Bulk of Funds
Southwestern Jewish Press, November 2, 1956, Pages 1, 6

Sixty-five percent of the net amount raised in the 1956 United Jewish Fund Drive will go to the United Jewish Appeal if the recommendations of the Allocations Committee are followed by the Fund Board of Directors, according to Dr. Joshua Rittoff, Chairman of the Committee.

The Committee completed a very careful analysis and study of the over 75 requesting agencies during a six week period in which four meetings were held including an open hearing for representatives of requesting organizations. Twelve of the major agencies presented their requests in person at this Open Hearing several weeks ago.

Last Sunday the committee completed its job in a six hour session and is now preparing its report and recommendations for the Fund Board meeting to be held on Tuesday, November 20.

Dr. Rittoff’s preliminary report indicated that if the recommendations are acceptable to the Directors of the Fund an additional 4 percent will go to other Overseas and Israel Organizations, including Histadrut; and national agencies will receive .082 percent of the net amount.

Besides the increase to the United Jewish Appeal, other increases to be recommended were to include the Hebrew University –Technion, the American Fund for Israel Institutions, and the United Hias Service, among the Overseas Agencies.

In Community Relations agencies increases are considered for the American Jewish Congress and the Joint Defense Appeal.

In the Health and Welfare field increases were recommended for the Jewish Committee for Personal Service and its Gateway Institution for mental illness in Los Angeles.

The National Jewish Welfare Board, working with men and women in the Armed Services, as well as with the Jewish Community Centers of America was also recommended for an increase.

One new agency, the National Community Relations Advisory Council, will be included as a beneficiary for a small subvention; and one national hospital, Leo N. Levi Memorial Hospital of Hot Springs, Arkansas, was dropped from the list of beneficiaries, according to Rittoff.

The completed report and recommendations of the committee, as approved by the directors of the United Jewish Fund, will be presented at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Fund on Saturday, December 8, 1956.
