United Fund Campaign To Have Early Start

An early United Jewish Fund Campaign will be in the planning for the 1957 Drive, according to Victor Schulman, and Dr. Walter Ornstein, newly appointed campaign leaders.
“The emergency for Jews in North Africa, Hungary, Eastern Europe, is such that it requires immediate action on the part of American Jewry,” The campaign chairmen said. “We must have, if we are going to be in time, in 1957, to save lives a greater goal, an earlier and speedier drive than ever before, finer coverage of all Jews, and a much greater outpouring of contributions from the Jews of San Diego,” they continued.
Working with a campaign committee of former chairmen, the seasoned campaign leaders are preparing the groundwork for the greatest and largest Jewish fund-raising effort in history.
Besides the needs of the regular Fund campaign for over 45 overseas, national and local agencies, including the United Jewish Appeal, San Diego has been asked by the UJA to participate in the Special Survival Rescue Fund for $100,00,000 in 1957. “This represents 100,000 immigrants to Israel in 1957–100,000 lives that can be saved if we will it.” Goal in San Diego, according to Ornstein and Schulman, must be approximately $300,000 if the needs are to be met.
Volunteers re being called for immediately to staff the various jobs of the campaign, and all Synagogues and local organizations are being asked for their cooperation. Workers will be needed in much larger numbers to meet the challenge of 1967 the general co-chairmen stated. “Each year is San Diego the campaign loses thousands of dollars because we do not have sufficient manpower to conduct a completely thorough solicitation. This deficiency is t every level — office help, personnel, solicitors and telephone workers.”
“Marching Feet” of immigrants — of wandering Jews — to Israel will be the 1957 theme, with a reminder that “1948 plus 1936 equal 1957.” In 1936 Hitlerism began the murder of 6,000,000 Jews whom American Jewry could have saved had we been prepared. In 1948 Israel was at war and immigration to Israel was on the upsurge. Today in 1957 the cycle has been completed and security and immigration in Israel are gain the challenge.
“The security of Israel must be made firm so that 100,000 immigrants will be able to find a new home and a new life in Israel in 1957,” Ornstein and Schulman stated.
Campaign leaders urged the signing of the worker’s coupon and the volunteering now of all those interested in working on the 1957 “Marching Feet” campaign.

Pioneer Women Hold Regional Conference Here January 11-14

Pioneer Women, Negba and Shoshana groups, will hold a conference of the entire western region of Pioneer Women on January 11, 12, 13, and 14, with headquarters at the San Diego Hotel. Under the direction of chairmen Mrs. Rose Brooker and Mrs. Leo Rose, and the regional chairman, Mrs. Ann Lebow.
Guest speakers from the national office of Pioneer Women will be Mrs. Esther Zackler, past president of the Chicago Council of Pioneer Women and member of the national board, and Batsheva Vilensky, delegate from the Moetzet Hapoalot, (working women’s council) in Israel. They will lead the discussions at the workshop sessions.
The year 1957 will also see the 20th anniversary of the Negba club and the 10th anniversary of the Shoshana club in Sn Diego. In honor of these anniversaries, twenty new members of Negba and ten new members of Shoshana will be installed in a candle-light ceremony at the conclusion of the dinner on Sunday evening.

Rabbis To Meet Here

The Hotel del Coronado will be the site of annual convention and election of officers of the Western Association of Reform Rabbis (WARR) from Jan. 6 through 9, it was announced by Rabbi Bernard Harrison of Temple Emanuel of Beverly Hills, President. Host rabbi will be Morton J. Cohn, Temple Beth Israel of Sn Diego, and program chairman will be Dr. Max Nussbaum of Temple Israel of Hollywood.
Rabbis from more than 50 Reform congregations on the West Coast are expected to attend the meeting. Speaker at the opening dinner on Sunday night will be Dr. Samuel S. Cohen, Professor of Theology at the California School of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. His subject will be “Spinoza and His Excommunication.”

Fund To Elect New Officers for 1957

The Board of Directors of the United Jewish Fund will have its first meeting of the New Year on Wednesday, January 9, 1957, in the State Room of the San Diego Hotel, Morris Douglas, President, announced.
A dinner meeting at which new members will be introduced, the directors will concern themselves with the election of officers and executive committee to guide the Fund’s activities in 1957. A president, three vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, and seven members of the executive committee will be elected.
Board members will also discuss the needs of Jews throughout the world and complete plans for the 1957 United Jewish Fund Campaign. Goal, dates and methods will be considered.
Chairman of the nominating committee to bring in a slate of officers for 1957 is Samuel Sussman. Officers of the Fund in the past year were: President, Morris W. Douglas; Vice Presidents, Milton Y. Roberts, Albert Steinbaum (deceased) and Dr. Walter Ornstein; Secretary, Seymour Rabin; Treasurer, William Colt. Member of the executive committee were: Mrs. Gabriel Berg, Carl M. Esenoff, arthur Goodman, Maury Novak, William Schwartz, Harry Sugarman and Harry Mallen.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Steffel of San Diego take pleasure in announcing the engagement of their daughter Roslyn to Mr. Robert Gardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gardner of Oceanside, formerly of San Diego.
Roslyn is a graduate of Point Loma High School. Robert attended Hoover and San Diego High Schools and is a graduate of Oceanside High School.

Esther Silbermann, talented concert pianist, will spend two months in San Diego with her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and MRs. David Miller. Mrs. Silbermann is a resident of New York City.

A gay birthday party with lovely gifts and cards was held at the Home for the Aged in honor of Mrs. Anna Horrow. Her childre, Rod and Sue Lowitz, their families, and forty well wishers, helped make the afternoon a happy one. Mrs. Janet Moss, guest of the Home, gave one of her recitations which delighted the guests. Delicious refreshments were served.

Carol Freedman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Freedman, won first prize of a Morse Sewing Machine in a recent contest run by that company. She told in 20 words why she wanted one for her mother.

Melvyn Stein, of the Temple Beth Israel Confirmation Class, was recently promoted to Commander of the “A” Company at Brown Military Academy . Captain Stein is the youngest commissioned officer in the Academy High School and Ethel Stein and Grandmother Bertha Moosios are justly proud, especially when they watch him lead the Cadet Battalion onto the Parade ground.

When the schools closed Dr. A.P. Nasatir headed East for New York and St. Louis and his wife Ida went north to San Francisco. He went to attend the annual Historical Society meeting; Ida to visit her famiy. She will be guest speaker at an Israel Bonds award party in San Francisco.

Hadassah To Hear About Youth Aliyah

At noon on Thursday, January 24, in the Lafayette Hotel, Hadassah will honor at the Youth Aliyah minyons at their luncheon meeting.
The guest speaker will be Mr. Phillip Gillon, widely acclaimed author and journalist, who was born in North Africa but lives most of his life in Israel.
In the 22 years of existence, Youth Aliyah has brought some 75,000 children from approximately 72 different countries into Israel. Here their job began with the rehabilitation and assimilation of these children into Israeli citizens. Recent events have not slowed down the workers of Youth Aliyah. Today, as in the past, many children are being brought into Israel.
Mrs. Rudolph Hess is Youth Aliyah chairman. Mrs. Edward Kitaen and Mrs. Sidney Gerstler, co-chairmen, are ably assisted by Mmes. Charles A. Fleischner, Arthur Pugatz, Robert Kipnis, and Ben Snyder. Mrs. Alan Schrieber is Program Chairman, Mrs. Leon Solomon is her co-chairman, and Mrs. Ray Bass is Hospitality Chairman.

Dr. Moorsteen To Talk at Council “Coffee Chat”

Another interesting Mr. and Mrs. Coffee Chat will be given by the National Council of Jewish Women on Saturday evening, Jan. 12th. Dr. Richard Moorsteen, who recently returned from a study trip to the U.S.S. R. will present “The Soviet Union in Picture and Story.” Dr. Moorsteen’s background in Soviet economics, both at Stanford and Columbia Universities, together with his travels through Russia, well qualify him to speak on this subject. Dr. Moorsteen is a native of San Diego and son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Moorsteen.

Card Party At Hebrew Home Attracts Many

The Card Party and Social held at the Hebrew Home for the Aged on Dec. 9, under the auspices of the Women’s Auxiliary, chaired by Mrs. Harry Snyder, attracted more than 150 people. Mrs. Jos. Shulack is Ways and Means Chairman for the Auxiliary and Mrs. I. Rottman and Rose Neumann helped serve. MRs. Snyder wishes to thank the members of her committee for the donatins of cake and those who attended the affair and helped make it a success.
The next meeting of the Auxiliary is scheduled for January 23. However, members of the community are invited to visit the Home at any time.

Mrs. Jack Stern, President of San Diego Section of National Council of Jewish Women will preside at the luncheon committee on Monday, January 7, at 11:45 a.mn. at the Lafayette Hotel. The program chairman, Mrs. Simon Reznikoff, proudly announces the program “Omnibus” — something for everyone. Mr. Craig Noel, resident director of the Globe Theatre (S.D. community Theatre) will be master of ceremonies.
Mr. Noel will introduce the following in a varied four-part presentation: 1. Dr. Walter Ornstein, who has recently returned from a trip to Israel will talk about “Israel on the day before the attack.” 2. Mrs. Natalie Mayo Edwin, supervising librarian of the children’s division of the San Diego Public Library, will discuss the selection of children’s books. 3. There will be an interview of a new American who was only last month a Hungarian citizen living behind the Soviet Iron Curtain. 4. Forrest and Romona Gantz will sing songs of San Diego from “Caught in the Act.”
