Donna Gail Godes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Ivan Godes, became the bride of Harvey Lewis Cohen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Cohen, on December 23 at Temple Beth Israel.  Rabbi Morton J. Cohn officiated.

A reception for 250 guests followed in the Cotillion Room of the El Cortez Hotel.  The couple will reside at 4616 Florida Street.

Mrs. Martha Hollander will leave next week for an extended vacation.  Her plans include a trip to New Orleans, Miami Beach and Cuba.

The children, grandchildren, close members of his family and his federal court staff gathered at the Kona Kai Club on January 4, to honor Judge Jacob Weinberger on his 75th birthday.  Hosts and hostesses for the dinner party were the judge’s son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Weinberger, and is daughter, Mrs. Robert Hafter and Mr. Hafter.

A successful benefit “Dessert” for Hadassah was held by Mrs. Harry Snyder, Israel Tourist Chairman, on January 10.

Al DeSure wishes to thank his friends for their consideration and good wishes during his recent illness.

Mrs. Edward Cherney will leave tomorrow for her first trip East since she moved to San Diego.  Her two grandchildren and daughter Joyce are eagerly awaiting her arrival in Buffalo. She will also visit friends and relatives in Rochester and New York City.

Tifereth Israel Couples Club — If you like good Italian spaghetti, then come to the Tifereth Israel Couples Club Spaghetti Feed on January 19, at Tifereth Israel Synagogue.  The cost is $1 per person.

A miscellaneous bridal shower and luncheon will be tendered Sandra Lee Lipton on January 12, in honor of her forthcoming marriage. Her  aunts, Mrs. Wm. Lipin and Mrs. Bernard Lipinsky, will co-hostess the luncehon at the Kona Kai Club. The wedding has been set for January 19.

A birthday party will be held for Alice Lowenstein at the Hebrew Home for the Aged on January 12, in honor of her 87th birthday.  Mrs. Lowenstein was a founder of the San Diego Chapter of the Council of Jewish Women. Her daughter, Mrs. Harry Bennett, will sponsor the party.

Women’s League of Center Hold Fashion Show

A preview showing of the 1957 line of Rose Marie Reid bathing suits and accessories is being planned for your pleasure by the Women’s League, J.C.C. at a delightful afternoon  tea on Wednesday, January 30th, 1:00 p.m. in the Terrace Room of the Lafayette Hotel.  Planned and staged in the finest tradition of a professional fashion show, complete with beautiful models, the program will interest everyone.

For paid up members of the Women’s League there is no charge; for all others,  a donation of $1.00.

Those who have the usual baby sitter problems, arrangements have been made for you to leave the kiddies at the Center, properly supervised and free of charge. Just call JUniper 2-1828 or ATwater 1-7744 for reservations.

In December the New Life Club elected the following officers: Jerry Sonnabend, President; Joseph Schwarz, Vice-President; Ernest Finch, Treasurer; Fanny Mark, Secretary.  Board members are Carl Friend, Charles Tennen, Salomon Berkowitz, Mendel Flaster, Henry Stein, Abe Sonnabend, Lil Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Lavender.

The Club meets the first Sunday of every month at the Beth Jacob Center.

Eddie Fisher Stars At Hadassah’s Presentation Ball

An estimated 1,000 guests are expected to attend the Hadassah Presentation Ball on January 26, 8:30 p.m. in the Hotel del Coronado ballroom. There are still some tickets available at $2.50  each, throguh Mrs. Nathan Bloom, ticket chairman, AC-3-0842.

A stagline of seventeen young men have been chosen escorts for the debutantes for the first dance. These boys are Jimmy Deutch, Mike Dickman, Ronnie Doctor, James Elden, J. Goldberg, Larry Harper, Allen Jaffee, David Jarnowsky, Lou Kewkowicz, Dick Libby, Stuart Mallen, Larry Ratner, Ed Rosenthal, Phil Saran, Cliff Schrager, Larry Strauss and Sig Urbeck.

The appearance of Eddie Fisher will highlight the evening and greatly aid Hadassah in making the Ball a success.

A recent cocktail hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Harry J. Harkavy in their home honored the Presentation Ball planning committee and their husbands.

Institute of Jewish Studies Resuming Classes Jan. 16

Tired of watching television?  Looking for something else to do?  Then enroll for Institute of Jewish Studies classes beginning January 16 at 7:30 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 30th and Howard Sts.  Sposored by congregations of Beth Jacob, Beth Israel and Tifereth Israel, the Institute offers a variety of courses designed to appeal to adults and will by taught by Rabbis Morton J. Cohn, Monroe Levens and Baruch Stern, Mrs. Leon Elkind, Mrs. Alex Chajes, Cantor Joseph Cysner, and Mr. Isaac Domnitz. Although classes have been in session during a Fall semester, previous attendance is not necessary for participation in the Soring semester. Blond, blue eyed Rand Hyman is the newest member of the Milton Effron famiy.  He joined his siter Nita, 5 years, and brother Marc, 4 years, on December 18.

Maternal grandmother is Mrs. Millie Kerstein; paternal grandmother is Mrs. Hyman Effron.

Adult Education Public Speaking Class at YWCA

Registrations are now being accepted for the Spring Session of the Public Speaking Class, sponsored by the San Diego Evening High School as part of the adult Education program of the San Diego Schools.  Miss Esther Siegel is the instructor. The class meets every Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 at the Y.W.C.A., 1012 “C” St.

The course is a practical one, arranged to help the individual to be more effective in business, civic and social activities.  Emphasis is placed upon developing confidence and poise, including training in diction, vocabulary building and proper use of the voice.

In addition to being on the staff of the Adult Education Department, Miss Siegel has a private studio of Speech Arts in the Barcelona Hotel.
