Hadassah will hold no regular April meeting. Be cognizant of World Jewish Child’s Day. Hadassah, the official American representative of Youth Aliyah, is the prime organizer of World Jewish Child’s Day. Funds raised from WJ?CD have rehabilitated children from 72 countries, making possible housing, schooling, medical care and vocational training.

The long awaited film on Israel will definitely be shown at the March 25th meeting of the lodge. When this film was scheduled to be shown at the last meeting one of the largest turnouts of the Lodge came, and were disappointed. This will be an open meeting, and friends and wives are invited.
Excellent planning for the forthcoming visit on April 8 of District Grand President Jake Shameno is being made by Brother Bill Podoloff, and his committee consisting of Ed Breitbard and Mickey Fredman.
Jack Spatz, who always does such an admirable job with the difficult taks of retention, reports one of the best showings in years. There are only about a fourth of the lodge who have not as yet paid their 1957 dues. Delegates to the District Convention this Summer in San Francisco were elected at the last meeting. They were: President Ed Harmann, Abe Sklar, Mickey Fredman, Morrie Krause, and Gerry Freedman. Joe Kaplan was elected to go as first Alternate.

Hebrew Home For the Aged Auxiliary

Wednesday, March 27 at 12 o’clock the Hebrew Home for the Aged will hold their regular monthly meeting at the Home, 4075 – 54th St. Mrs. Cele Feldman and a very able committee are planning a most delightful and delectable luncheon. Cards will be the program for the afternoon and guests are urged to arrange their own games, bridge, mah jong, poker and, of course, pan. Please bring your own cards and chips. There will be transportation from 54th and University Ave and 54th and El Cajon Blvd, between 11:45 and 12:15. On Tuesday evening, March 26, at 8:30 p.m., the Samuel I. Fox Lodge will hold another social evening to which all are invited.
We will have a panel discussion on Jewry in the community. The panel is composed of MR. Al Hutler, Executive Sec., United Jewish Welfare Fund; Henrietta Rubinstein, Director of Jewish Social Service Agency; Mr. Irving Mortin, Director of Jewish Community Center and Maxwell Kaufman, Editor of the Jewish Press.

Area Group Plan for U.J.A. Drive

Campaigning for the United Jewish Fund’s 1957 Combined Jewish Appeal will begin in the County Areas immediately following the Community Rally on March 31, according to Alex Maisel, Area Chairman.
He announced the appointment of Lewis Kipperman, Coronado merchant, to head the Coronado Campaign.
At the same time he announced the acceptance of leadership of the North County drive by Leon Reichel, Vista contractor.
Plans are underway to have a dinner meeting in Coronado April 2 and in Oceanside on April 7.

Hi-Lites of the March 14th meeting — unquestionably the largest turnout in many a Thursday — the promised steak dinner surpassed the expectation of even the confirmed skeptics — the door prize — a garbage disposal, donated by builder Leonard Drogin, was carted away by winner, Sy Krauss. Entertainment, too long absent from the dinner meetings, was fired at the group in a double barrel shot — the Topnotchers, a musical trio with very good material, was well received — then Dr. Earl Brodie delivered a stirring lecture on hypnotism in its application to medicine –Earl, in capsule form, outlined the uses of hypnotism from early days to the present time, disassociating the humbug of the entertainer to its current acceptance by competent medical men — his live demonstration held the entire assemblage completely enthralled –guests included Jerry Gertz, George Wixen, Dr. Harvey J. Urgan and Dr. Lands — a new member, Louis Felheim of Cincinnati, joined the Guardians.

The middle-aged couple, nattily dressed, took a booth at Lew Lipton’s last Wednesday noon. They paged Restauranteur Lew and the man, introducing himself, said: “We’re visiting here from Tacoma and we’ve heard a lot about your extraordinary lunches.” Lew beamed appreciatively and answered: “Well, we do try our best and believe me it certainly does make us feel good to hear favorable reports.” — Lew then summoned the waitress, handed the couple a menu and making like a maitre d’, he commanded: “See that these visitors are given our usual good service!: The multi-faceted menu was studied carefully and from the list of exotic dishes, the man spoke up with: “We’ll have some toast and coffee.”

His early years of training in the Boy Scouts enabled one of our leading barristers to march continually along the path of “one good deed per day.” There has been no variance in his rigid and unswerving adherence to this formula — be it a helping hand — a kind word or a handout– and so it was that our veteran Boy Scout performed an unselfish act last Friday. The parking meter near 6th and Broadway registered “Violation” — the motorcycle officer, patrolling the neighborhood, was fast approaching the new Cadillac — ticket book in hand — but Ben Rubin casually dropped three pennies in the slot and walked merrily to his office — an unheralded benefactor in these trouble times…

Two Guardians, recently returned from a cyclonic twelve-day conducted tour of the famous Mardi Gras; the prepared schedule called for whirlwind activity night and day with a complete deemphasis on sleep. Both Sanford Goldman and George Solomon were in complete accord that although the trip was demanding to the point of exhaustion, they have already made reservations for Mardi Gras 1958. As the foursome alighted wearily from the train last Sunday, Doe turned to Sanford and said: “I told you we never should have married women so much younger than ourselves.”

Plans are being formulated for a repeat of the profitable Cadillac drawing which generated so much enthusiasm last year. (Remember? –a complete sellout!) Tentatively, co-chairmen Harry Snyder and Al DeSure are planning to have the affair sometime in May — as plans materialize, this column will advise of progress and specific dates. The most important feature of this event is the gratifying fact that the Hebrew Home for the Aged is the net winner of All the profits.
