$120,000 U.J.F. Goal Need
Southwestern Jewish Press, April 5, 1957, Pages 1, 14

Inspired by the understanding that the year 1957 equals 1936 plus 1948, San Diego’s Jewish community officially opened the 1957 campaign on behalf of the regular needs of the United Jewish Fund’s local, national and overseas beneficiaries, and the Emergency Rescue Fund of the United Jewish Appeal.

Milton Y. Roberts, Fund President, in announcing the “Kickoff” said, “We will rise to the challenge to meet a record goal of $295,000 not only to carry on the day by day work of our over 55 agencies but to rescue 100,000 Jewish men, women and children. If we will it they will be saved–not lost–in 1957.”

Sparked by outstanding and inspiring gifts in the early stages of the campaign, Dr. Walter Ornstein and Victor Schulman, General Campaign Co-Chairmen, were able to announced that at the end of the first five days of the drive only $120,000 more must be raised before the end of the drive to reach the goal.

Early gifts included 46 gifts off over $1,000, led by two $10,000 contributions of which $13,000 was for the Rescue Fund.

Pace Setters, led by Abe Abramson, and the Women’s Division, chaired by Mrs. Lewis Solomon, have done an inspiring job, according to the chairmen.

Seventy lives have already been saved in the Rescue Fund, while better than 50% of the Regular Drive has been completed.  Another $50,000 must be raised in the Rescue Fund to meet our goal of 120 lives; while $75,000 additional will h ave to be secured in the Regular Fund Drive to meet the ordinary commitments

“Campaigners,” led by Abraham Sklar; “Marchers,” by Isaac Domnitz,” “Areas,” headed by Alex Maisel, have begun to  turn in reports.

Commander Ellihu Rickel, and Dr. Harry Ruja are enthusiastic about the prospects of the Military Division, and the Students.

The Christian Division, spearheaded by a luncheon on Monday at which Judge Emanuel Halevy spoke, have already begun to secure gifts.  Richard A. Nelson and his co-chairmen are urging Christians to participate fully.

Over 300 workers in all divisions are soliciting contributions in what will be the fastest and largest campaign in community history.

Campaign leaders point out the symbol of the 1957 campaign — “Marching Feet” — to Judge Emanuel Halevy of Israel, who spoke to a community rally and to the Christian Committee to open the 1957 campaign. Victor Schulman, campaign co-chairman, Milton Y. Roberts, president of the United Jewish Fund; Richard A. Nelson, Christian Committee Chairman, and Dr. Walter Ornstein, Campaign Co-chairman, look on.

Southwestern Jewish Press, April 5, 1957, Pages 1, 14

The ladies have shown the way again in saving lives.

“With the official campaign underway only five days the Women’s Division has already saved over thirty of the fifty lives they have accepted as their quota,” Mrs. Lewis Solomon, Women’s Division Chairman, said.

Completing the second phase of the campaign with close to $35,000 already secured (this is as much as was raised in the entire 1956 campaign) the division is preparing to open its general solicitation.

“The $50,000 Lifeline” television luncheons from KFMB-TV, Channel 8, saw over 100 women pledge $104 or more successfully  and culminated the second phase under th leadership of luncheon chairman, Mrs. Morton J. Cohn.

In attendance at the studio luncheon as honored guests were  Mayor Charles Dail, County Superintendent Graff Austin, Richard A. Nelson, Dr. Lester E. Bond, and Mrs. Alyis Laemmle, who spoke.  Mrs. Irving Alexander was chairman of the TV broadcast. The program was beamed into the homes of hostesses Mrs. William Carter and her co-hostesses Mesdames Larry Lawrence, Robert Epsten and George Burnett. A luncheon was also held at the home of Mrs. Leonard Drogin.  Assisting Mrs. Drogin as co-hostesses were Mesdames Rodin Horrow, Murray D. Goodrich and Abraham Sklar.

Mesdames Abe and Nathaniel Ratner, Herbert Eber and Harry Farb hosted the TV luncheon at the studio of KFMB-TV, Channel 8.

Aiding  Mrs. Solomon are Mrs. E. Slayen, Mrs. Herbert Eber, Mrs. Morton J. Cohn, Mrs. Irving Alexander, all co-chairmen.
