Jewish USO Saved by Fund Allocation
Southwestern Jewish Press, May 3, 1957, Page 5

The continuation of the program for Jewish men and women in the Armed Services stationed in the San Diego area was assured under a financial arrangement with the United Jewish Fund, voted by the Directors of the Fund at their April meeting.

Morris W. Douglas, Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, stated that the Directors of the Fund, at their last meeting, voted to finance the continuation of the Armed Services Program which had been discontinued because of the withdrawal of designation and funds by the National U.S.O.

A nine month budget of $3,662 was granted by the Fund to be secured from the 1957 Campaign, if enough money is raised for that purpose, and if not to be taken out of reserve funds that have been accumulated for such local emergencies.

An office manned by a secretary responsible for the Administration of the program will be supervised by the Federation Executive and the area Director for the National Jewish Welfare Board.

The United Jewish Fund is in the midst of its 1957 campaign to meet its normal, regular local and national and overseas needs and at the same time in the United Jewish Appeal’s Special Emergency Rescue Fund to meet the emergency needs of saving the lives of over 100,000 Jews. Financing the program for men and women in the Armed Service when the need arose, is just one of the many services rendered to the Jewish community of San Diego by its United Jewish Fund.

Your Assemblyman Reports
Southwestern Jewish Press, May 3, 1957, Page 6

By Sheridan N. Hegland
Assemblyman, Seventy-Seventh District

At the last session I voted against FEPC. I shall again.

The measure would establish a new commission, with annual salaries for each member of $10,500 plus expenses. The commission would be charged with the duty of eliminating discrimination in employment for reason of race, creed or color.

Any business men found guilty of such discrimination could be jailed for six months.

Discrimination is an ugly and evil thing. But we cannot legislate bortherhood.

I shall vote against FEPC for a deeper and more abiding reason, my faith in democracy as outlined by Thomas Jefferson.

The early Americans knew well the oppression of European governments. They knew the crimes of old world despots.  That was why in his confession of faith, Jefferson said, “He who governs least, governs best.”

Society has many arms; many ways of getting things done. There’s the family, the school, the church. There are voluntary organizations, clubs, unions, fraternal societies, employers groups, chambers of commerce, women’s clubs.

Every time government is given a new job to do, government becomes more powerful.  And to exactly the same extent, society’s other arms become weaker.  As government flourishes, the family, the school, the church weaken.

The long arm of government already has too much muscle.
