Baron to be honored by historians

LOS ANGELES –Members of the annual Western Jewish Studies Association Conference will pay tribute to one of its past presidents, Lawrence Baron, PhD., former head of the Lipinsky Institute for Judaic Studies at San Diego State University and, in retirement, a reviewer of Jewish-interest movies for San Diego Jewish World, among other pursuits.

At an April 8 tribute luncheon at Loyola Marymount University, speakers will include Profs. Holli Levitsky of the host campus; Zev Garber of Los Angeles Valley College, Bonnie Harris of San Diego STate University, Tom Pytell of Cal State Santa Barbara and David WEinberg of Wayne STate University.

This will be followed by a Lawrence Baron Tribute Panel, to be chaired by Prof. Weinberg of Wayne State University, and including as panelists Profs. Victoria Khiterer of Millersville University, Lynn Rapaport of Pomona College and Elke Heckner of the University of California Berkeley.

As a professor of history, Baron combined his love of movies with his love for his fellow Jews in two books.  He authored Projecting the Holocaust Into the Present, which dealt with how the Shoah has been portrayed in movies.  He also edited and contributed to The Modern Jewish Experience in World Cinema.

In San Diego, Baron is a member of Temple Emanu-El and is a former president of the Louis Rose Society for the Preservation of Jewish History.
