“Judy”, a study by Lawrence Schiller, 20-year-old San Diegan, captured first place in the Portraiture Division of the Kappa Alpha Nu Photography Competition. The “Judy” in the portrait is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. Karp of Pt. Loma.
Additional awards won by Schiller included 2nd place in Portfolios, Honorable Mention in Features, 2nd and 3rd place in Sports and the Graflex Plaque for best newspaper photographic exhibit.

Hadassah Holds Donor Luncheon

Members of Hadassah will gather at the U.S. Grant Hotel on June 20th for their Donor Luncheon. The theme will be “And the Desert Shall Bloom.” The chapter will also mark Hadassah’s 45th anniversary and will announce their Woman of the Year.
Mrs. Benjamin Miller of Los Angeles will be the key speaker. Highlights of the afternoon will be a parody of “My Fair Lady.”
Decorations chairman is Mrs. Martin Ernest. She will be assisted by Mesdames David Garfield, Norman Smith, M.L. Young Leadership Group Works for Community

Mr. Homer Dietrich, Director of Public Welfare for the County of San Diego, was the principal speaker at the June meeting of the Community Service Organization held this week.
The Welfare Director was one of the many religious, civic, communal and professional leaders who have appeared before the organization in the past two and one half years. Other prominent speakers included Mayor Charles Dail, City Manager Campbell, A. J. Sutherland, President Security Trust and Savings Bank; Rabbis Morton J. Cohn and Monroe Levens; Albert A. Hutler, Executive Director United Jewish Fund and Federation; Edward Breitbard, Past-President Jewish Community center; Mrs. David Rubenstein, Executive Secretary Jewish Social Service Agency; Maxwell Kaufman, President, Hebrew Home for the Aged, and many others.
Founded two and one-half years ago, when the Fund-Federation felt that there was a need to train young men for future leadership the Community Service Organization now has a membership of 35. Among its membership is counted men in the professions, in education and in business. Those who have been selected for membership have agreed to prepare themselves for positions of leadership and responsibility through education and service in community endeavors. Arthur Goodman, who founded the organization, as the Fund Chairman on Young Leadership, became its first president and was succeeded by William Carter, Carl M. Esenoff, Eli H. Levenson and Albert A Hutler are advisors to the Group.
Officers are: Dr. Gerald Kobernick, President; Robert Shapiro, Vice-President; Secretary, Dr. Norman Mann; and Treasurer, Harold Lehrer.
The purposes of the group are to interest and develop leadership of young men in community activities, to encourage individual interests and promote leadership in community projects. The group is self sustaining, not financially dependent on any other organization, and is not used as a fund raising organization.
Charter members of the organization were: Carter, Stuart L. Ferrer, Stanly Foster, Goodman, Mrrill J. Jacobson, William Kenton, Dr. Albert Klug, Kobernick, Benjamin Press, Herbert I. Reder, Sheldon Sackheim and Shapiro.
Monthly meetings are designed to acquaint members with the various existing social and economic services in the community and the additional needs of the community.
Currently the Community service Organization is conducting a program, under the Chairmanship of Edward Haimsohn, to furnish scholarships for Camp Jaycee of the Jewish Community Center in order to send a large number of youngsters to the Day Camp.

Installation of new officers and a dinner dance will be held by the City of Hope Jr. Auxiliary on Saturday evening, June 22. In the future, the organization will operate as a couple’s club with husband and wife sharing an office.
The following members will be installed Messrs. and Mesdames Barney Korey, Adrian Laseter, Al Hyman, Harry Paisin, Jerome Schechter, Jack Berman and Stanford Brust.

“Coffee Chats” Wind Up Season Activity

The Mr. and Mrs. Coffee Chat Committee of the National Council of Jewish Women gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Richmond on Saturday evening, May 25th, to wind up a successful 1956-67 lecture series.
Those attending were Messrs and Mesdames Abe Berland, Bob Carlin, Mel Frankel, Don Goodwin, Howard Harris, Floyd Kramer, Lester Kraus, Art Levy, Hebert Malley. Also Fred Marshall, Simon Reznikoff, Herb Robbins, Norman Sperber, Jack Wilner and Rock Zaitsow.

Final arrangements for the City of Hope Third Annual Donor Luncheon have been made. The luncheon will be held in the Venetian Room of the U.S. grant Hotel on Tuesday, June 25th, at 12 noon. First Center Quad City Conference Held in Coronado

The Directors of the Jewish Community Center of San Diego acted as hosts for an informal conference of officers and executive staff of Jewish Community Centers of intermediate cities on June 8 and 9, at the Hotel del Coronado, according to William B. Schwartz, local Center President.
Arranged in cooperation with the Western Region of the National Jewish Welfare Board, both volunteer and professional staffs of Centers in the Southwest consisting of Long Beach, Tucson, P:hoenix, and San Diego participated in the meetings.
Co-Chairmen of the Conference were Albert A. Hutler, Executive Director of the San Diego Jewish Community Center, and Leo Okin of San Francisco, Field Representative of the Western Region of the National Jewish Welfare Board. Mr. Okin also participated as a consultant.
Participating in the conference from San Diego were: William B. Schwartz, Maury Novak, MOrris Douglas, Manny Adler, Sidney Posin, Albert A. Hutler and Irving Mortin.
From Tucson: Morris Rosenbaum, Morris A. Shanhouse, Ben Brooks, Mildred Faulkner. Phoenix was represented by Hirsh Kaplan, Ruben Bennett, Sol Jaffe, Morris Coleman and Herman A. Miller.
From Long Beach: Joshua Marcus, Bernard Wall, and Sam Roska.

La Jolla Playhouse Opens with Comedy

La Jolla Playhouse begins its eleventh season of professional summer theatre Tuesday night, June 25th in an appropriately gay moo with the light hearted comedy success of London and New York, “The Reluctant Debutante” by William Douglas Home.
Brenda Forbes and Lynn Bailey, who both played in the New York cast, will be co-starred in La Jolla with the popular British comedian, Reginald Gardner.
Tickets to “The Reluctant Debutante” may be purchased beginning Saturday when the box offices open in La Jolla and the Grant Hotel.

Hebrew Home Observes Holiday Services

A large gathering of Jewish men and women attended a beautiful holiday service at the hebrew Home on 54th Street on Wednesday and Thursday, June 5th and 6th.
Mr. H. Levenson and Mr. Newman performed the services and Mr. I Jacobson delivered the memorial address and concluded by reciting a special prayer to the memory of all departed men and women who have resided in the Home since it was established.

Sonia Weitzman Receives Council Scholarship

Mrs. Herbert Robbins, National Council of Jewish Women’s President, announced that the $100 scholarship was presented to Sonia Weitzman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Weitsman. Miss Weitzman, in her three years at Hoover High has been active in the school orchestra, the California Scholarship Federation, the Ducateers, the Future Teachers Club as well as numerous other activities. She plans to attend San Diego State College.
Sonia, who recently won the coveted trip to Mexico City, sponsored by the Jewish Community Center, is active in community life.

The well nown Yiddish actress, Clara Haberman, will appear in a play “The Eternal Fools.” There will be five scenes. Her husband, Joseph Haberman, a character actor, will assist. The peformance will take place on Sunday, June 23, at the Beth Jacob Center.

Senior Adults Have Entertainment — The Senior Adults program will be held on Tuesday, June 18 at 1 p.m. in the Jewish Community Center. Mr. Michael Schwartz, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Schwartz, will entertain with musical selections, jokes and sleight of hand. Mr. Ricky Herrmann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Herrmann, will present a selection of accordion music. Refreshments and cards will be part of the program. Thjere is no admission charge and all senior adults of the community are invited.
Open House Sunday Evenings for Single Adults — The Jewish Community Center has opened its doors for single adults, thirtyish and over every Sunday evening at 8 p.m. Games, discussions, dances and refreshments is the regular program. All single adults are invited to the open house and dance every Sunday evening.
Starlight Opera — The Youth Activities Committee’s determination to send two youth delegates tot he World Fellowship tour to Mexico City is insured by the project of selling tickets to the Starlight Opera performance of “Guys and Dolls” on Sunday, July 7. Every adult interested in supporting this youth program is urged to buy tickets. Phone AT 1-7744.
The delegates from the Western States who will go on this tour of Mexico City will assemble in San Diego on June 27. An orientation session will be held that evening at the Jewish Community Center and all Jewish youth in the community are invited to participate in the orientation and the dance that follows.
